Lan Ha Bay Sea Kayaking & Floating Village

Lan Ha Bay sits beside Ha Long Bay, sharing the same limestone karsts and emerald water, but with a fraction of the boat traffic, since most large cruise itineraries stay in Ha Long proper. This day trip is built for travellers who want the scenery without an overnight commitment, or who are adding a single day onto a Hanoi or Cat Ba stay.

The boat leaves the pier mid-morning and threads between the islands to a sheltered cove, where kayaks are unloaded for the day's main activity. Sea kayaking here means paddling into gaps between the karsts that motorboats can't reach, quiet lagoons enclosed by cliffs on three sides, where the water is often glassy enough to reflect the rock above it. Your guide leads at a relaxed pace, stopping to point out caves and rock formations along the way.

A visit to one of the bay's floating fishing communities follows. Families here live on rafts and houseboats anchored in sheltered water, raising fish in cages below the platforms and moving the whole settlement if conditions change. It's a working community rather than a display for visitors, and the stop is brief and respectful, a chance to see a way of life that has existed on this water for generations.

Lunch is served on board, usually fresh seafood, rice and local vegetables, timed for the middle of the day when the sun is highest. In the afternoon, the boat stops at a quiet beach for swimming, away from the busier spots closer to Ha Long town, before the return crossing in the late afternoon light.

The whole day covers less distance than an overnight cruise, but concentrates the parts of the bay most worth seeing: kayaking through the karsts, a genuine village visit, open water swimming, without the cost or time commitment of a night on board.

Kayaking requires no previous experience, and life jackets are worn throughout. Non-swimmers can still take part, staying in the kayak with a guide nearby. Bring a swimsuit, a change of clothes, sun protection and a hat, since the boat has limited shade during the crossing.

The best time to visit is October to April, when the water is calmer and skies are clearer. Summer, June to August, brings heat and the chance of storms that can shorten or cancel the kayaking portion, and the bay authorities suspend sailings if a typhoon approaches.

The day lasts around eight hours from the pier. Boat transfer, kayak hire and guide, the village visit, lunch and safety equipment are included. Hotel transfer from Hanoi is not, though it can be arranged separately for an additional cost.
