We visited Kyoto with high expectations and this ceremony exceeded all of them. The machiya is extraordinarily beautiful, the tea master utterly serene, and the ritual itself deeply moving. We left feeling genuinely different. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
I have travelled Japan several times and never found access to anything as genuine as this. The machiya is not a set — it is a living building with 200 years of history. The tea master is the real thing. Worth every yen.
We were the only guests in the basket. The pilot was extraordinary — he knew every temple by name and positioned us for the best light at exactly the right moment. The champagne breakfast on the plains afterward felt like a scene from a dream.
