Private Sandbank Picnic & Dolphin Cruise

Many of the Maldives' photographs of empty white sand and turquoise water are taken on sandbanks like this one, low, uninhabited strips of sand exposed at low tide, disappearing entirely at high tide, with nothing on them but what you bring. This experience reserves one for your group alone, for a private lunch and an afternoon with no other visitors in sight.

Your boat leaves the resort mid-morning, crossing open water to a sandbank chosen for the day based on tide and weather, since not every bank is exposed or accessible on every date. Arriving to an empty strip of sand ringed by shallow, clear water is the whole point: no other boats, no other guests, just the atoll around you.

A private chef travels with the boat and sets up on the sand, preparing a fresh lunch, often grilled seafood, salads and tropical fruit, cooked to order rather than transported pre-made. Umbrellas, loungers and shade are arranged before you arrive, and the shallow water around the bank is good for swimming and snorkelling, with coral visible close to the surface in several spots.

In the afternoon, as the tide starts to reclaim the sandbank, the boat sets off in search of dolphins. Spinner dolphins are resident in Maldivian waters year-round and are seen on the great majority of evening cruises, often in pods of a dozen or more, riding the boat's bow wave and leaping clear of the water. Your captain knows the channels where pods are most often found at this hour, when they move between deeper water and the reef edges to feed.

The cruise continues into the early evening, timed so that the light turns gold as you search, one of the best hours on the water in the Maldives. Dolphin sightings are common but never guaranteed, since these are wild animals following their own patterns rather than a scheduled show.

The day lasts around six hours. A private boat, exclusive sandbank access, a chef-prepared lunch, snorkelling equipment and the evening dolphin cruise are included. Resort accommodation and transfers are not.
