Arashiyama Bamboo Grove & Zen Garden Dawn Walk
Kyoto's most photographed bamboo grove, walked before the crowds and the tour groups arrive

What makes this different
Arashiyama's bamboo grove is one of the most photographed places in Japan, and also one of the most crowded by mid-morning, when tour buses from central Kyoto begin arriving in numbers. This walk is timed for dawn, when the grove is close to empty and the light filtering through the stalks is softer than anything the midday crowds see.
Meeting at Arashiyama Station just after sunrise, your guide leads you into the grove while the paths are still quiet. The bamboo here grows in dense stands reaching fifteen metres or more, and the sound, wind moving through the stalks, is part of the experience that photographs can't capture. A short walk through the grove leads to the Okochi Sanso villa gate and on to Tenryuji Temple, one of Kyoto's most important Zen temples and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Tenryuji's garden, designed in the fourteenth century, is one of the oldest surviving garden designs in Japan, built around a pond that reflects the wooded hillside behind it. Arriving early means the garden's stillness, meant to be part of the meditative design, is still intact. Your guide explains the principles of Zen garden design and the temple's role in Kyoto's history as the head temple of its own school of Rinzai Zen Buddhism.
From Tenryuji, the walk continues along the Katsura River, where traditional boats sometimes drift past and Togetsukyo Bridge, the Moon Crossing Bridge, frames the hills beyond. A stop at a small riverside teahouse offers green tea and a chance to sit with the view before the morning's main crowds arrive.
The walk ends around mid-morning with a map and suggestions for exploring further on your own, the monkey park on the hillside above, smaller temples in the surrounding hills, or simply more time in the grove now that the light has changed.
This is a walking tour rather than a strenuous hike, on flat paths throughout, suitable for most fitness levels. Comfortable shoes are the only real requirement, and a light jacket is worth bringing, since mornings can be cool even in the warmer months.
The best time to visit is any season, though spring and autumn bring the added draw of cherry blossoms or maple colour along the same paths. Whatever the season, arriving at dawn is what makes the difference here, not the time of year.
The walk lasts around four hours. An expert guide, Tenryuji Temple entry, tea at a riverside teahouse and a map for further exploring are included.
