Thar Desert Camel Safari & Overnight Camp

The dunes outside Jaisalmer are what most travellers picture when they imagine the Thar Desert, and a camel safari at sunset is the way locals have crossed this landscape for centuries. This overnight trip combines the ride with a night at a desert camp, away from the generator-powered resorts that have grown up closer to the city.

The afternoon begins with a drive from Jaisalmer to the dunes, usually toward Sam or the quieter Khuri area, depending on the season and current access. Camels are saddled and led out in a line, your handler walking alongside rather than riding, a slower and more traditional style than a tourist camel park. The ride crosses open sand for around ninety minutes, timed to reach a high dune as the sun begins to set.

Sunset over the Thar is a genuine spectacle: the sand shifts through gold, orange and deep red as the light drops, and the silence, broken only by the wind and the occasional bell on a camel's harness, is part of what draws people here. Photographs rarely do it justice, and most visitors simply watch.

The camp itself is either a fixed desert camp with proper tents, beds and a shared bathroom block, or, for those who want the fuller experience, a simpler setup with mattresses laid directly on the sand under open sky, weather permitting. Dinner is cooked over an open fire, typically a Rajasthani thali of dal, vegetables, roti and rice, and the evening includes a performance of Manganiyar or Langa folk music, the hereditary musician communities of the region, playing traditional instruments around the fire.

Nights in the desert can be cold, even when the days are hot, so warm layers are essential regardless of season. Stars over the dunes, with minimal light pollution, are one of the best reasons to stay overnight rather than returning to the city after sunset.

The camel ride is gentle and suited to most ages and fitness levels, though those with back problems should mention this when booking, as the animal's gait can be uneven for a few minutes at the start and end of the ride. Sunscreen, a hat, and a scarf for wind and dust are worth bringing for the ride itself.

The best season is October to March, when desert temperatures are far more comfortable. April to June brings extreme heat, and camps may adjust timing or close during the hottest weeks.
