The Maldives is 1,192 coral islands arranged across 26 atolls in the Indian Ocean, most of them uninhabited. The highest natural point is 2.4 metres above sea level. The country exists in a state of impermanence that makes it both achingly beautiful and quietly urgent to visit.

The overwater bungalow is the Maldives' defining image, a thatched room on stilts above a lagoon so clear you can see the reef from your bed. But the archipelago's finest experiences happen below the surface: manta rays at Hanifaru Bay during plankton season, whale sharks off Dhigurah, and coral gardens in the outer atolls that rival anything in the Pacific.

The Maldives has a significant sustainability problem: single-use plastics, reef damage from sunscreens, and the carbon cost of getting there. We partner only with resorts that operate zero-waste programmes, use reef-safe materials, and contribute to coral restoration projects. The experience should not come at the reef's expense.

We arrange seaplane transfers, private butler allocations, and marine biology guided dives for guests who want to understand what they're looking at.

Choosing where to stay shapes the whole trip. Most resorts occupy their own island, and the character of each varies enormously, from barefoot eco-retreats to palatial villas with private pools. The location matters as much as the style: resorts close to Malé, in the North and South Malé atolls, are reached by speedboat in less than an hour, while those in more distant atolls require a seaplane or a domestic flight followed by a boat. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so late international arrivals may need a night in Malé or at an airport hotel.

The house reef is one of the most important factors in choosing a resort. A good house reef, reachable by swimming from the beach or your villa, means you can snorkel every day without taking a boat. Ask about its condition before booking, as coral bleaching events have affected many reefs in recent years, though some are recovering.

Hanifaru Bay, in the Baa Atoll, is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve where manta rays gather in large numbers to feed, usually between June and November. Snorkelling there is tightly regulated to protect the mantas, with limits on visitor numbers and time in the water. Whale sharks can be seen year-round in the South Ari Atoll, especially around Dhigurah.

Local islands offer an alternative to resorts. Since guesthouses were allowed on inhabited islands, visitors can stay in small hotels among Maldivian communities, at a fraction of resort prices. Life on these islands follows local customs: alcohol is not available, and visitors should dress modestly away from designated bikini beaches.

The dry northeast monsoon, from December to April, brings the most sunshine and calm seas. The southwest monsoon, from May to November, brings more rain and wind, though sunny days are still common, and prices are lower. This is also the best season for manta rays in some atolls.

Malé, the capital, is one of the most densely populated cities in the world, with markets, mosques and the historic Friday Mosque built from coral stone. A short visit gives a glimpse of everyday Maldivian life beyond the resorts.

Five nights is a sensible minimum, and splitting the stay between two resorts in different atolls adds variety.
