Perhentian Islands SnorkellingTurtles, Reef Sharks & Coral
The reef that made Malaysian diving famous: sea turtles, blacktip reef sharks, and coral walls from 3 metres
What makes this different
The Perhentian Islands, Perhentian Besar and Perhentian Kecil, lie off the coast of Terengganu in northeast Malaysia, around thirty to forty-five minutes by speedboat from the jetty at Kuala Besut. They are part of a marine park, and their reefs are some of the most accessible in Malaysia, with coral beginning just metres from the beach. This trip visits three of the best snorkelling sites around the islands, including the bays where green sea turtles feed and the rocks where blacktip reef sharks patrol the shallows.
The boat picks you up from your chalet in the morning. The first stop is often a bay where turtles graze on seagrass in water only a few metres deep. Your guide, who swims with the group, knows the areas where they are most often seen and how to approach without disturbing them. Watching a turtle surface for air and glide back down to feed is one of the most memorable experiences in the islands.
Shark Point, off the rocky coast of Perhentian Besar, is known for blacktip reef sharks, which are shy and harmless to snorkellers. They are usually seen cruising over the reef edges, often in small groups. The coral here is varied, with hard and soft corals, giant clams and schools of reef fish, including parrotfish, fusiliers and bumphead parrotfish on lucky days.
The third stop is a coral garden, where the reef slopes gently and the colours are at their best in the midday light. Lunch is served at a beach restaurant, with time to swim, relax on the sand or explore on foot before the boat returns you to your chalet in the afternoon.
The trip runs during the islands' season, from around March to October. From November to February, the northeast monsoon brings rough seas and closes most operators. Visibility is usually at its best from May to August, when the water is calm and clear.
The islands are part of a marine park, and a conservation fee is charged on arrival. Please do not touch or stand on the coral, keep a respectful distance from turtles and sharks, and never try to ride or feed them. Wear reef-safe sunscreen or a rash guard, as some sunscreens damage coral.
The boat, a guide in the water, equipment and lunch are included. The ferry from Kuala Besut and gratuities are not included.
The trip suits everyone who can swim and float comfortably, including families. Life jackets are available for less confident swimmers, and the guide adapts the pace of the day to the group.
