About this experience

What makes this different

Sigiriya, the Lion Rock, is a massive column of rock rising around two hundred metres from the plains of central Sri Lanka, topped with the ruins of a palace built in the fifth century. It was created by King Kashyapa, who seized the throne after killing his father and moved his capital to the rock, fearing his half-brother's revenge. After Kashyapa's defeat in 495 AD, the site became a Buddhist monastery, and later it was abandoned. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most visited attractions in the country.

The climb is best made early, before the heat and the crowds. Your guide meets you at the ticket office at 6:30 AM, and after a walk through the gardens at the foot of the rock, the path begins to climb. The water gardens, symmetrical pools, fountains and pathways laid out in the fifth century, are among the oldest landscaped gardens in the world, and some of the fountains still work in the rainy season.

The first main stop is the frescoes, painted on a sheltered section of rock around a hundred metres up, reached by a spiral staircase. Only a small number of the original paintings survive, showing women in elaborate jewellery, sometimes described as celestial nymphs or royal attendants. Their identity is still debated. Photography is not allowed here to protect the colours, which remain vivid after fifteen centuries.

Below the frescoes, the Mirror Wall, once polished so smoothly that the king could see himself in it, now bears hundreds of verses scratched by visitors between the seventh and thirteenth centuries, praising the paintings and their beauty. They are among the earliest examples of Sinhala poetry and a striking record of early tourism.

The path continues to the Lion's Paws, two enormous stone paws on a platform, all that remains of a giant lion whose mouth formed the entrance to the final stairway. From here, a series of steep iron stairways, attached to the cliff face, climbs to the summit plateau. The steps are narrow and exposed, and those uncomfortable with heights may find them challenging, but the views make the climb worthwhile. At the top, the ruins of the palace, with foundations of rooms, cisterns and a throne cut into the rock, lie among grass and trees, and the view stretches across the jungle to the hills.

Descending, your guide explains the engineering and history, and the symbolism of the site as a link between heaven and earth. Breakfast is served at a local restaurant after the climb.

The best time to visit is from November to April, though rain is possible at any time of year. The climb takes around one and a half to two hours to the top and back, so bring water, a hat and comfortable shoes with good grip. Dress modestly, and avoid loud noises, as wasps sometimes nest in the rock and can be disturbed.

The experience lasts around four hours. A licensed guide, the entry fee and breakfast are included. Transfers from Dambulla or Habarana are not.
