About this experience

What makes this different

Four days is enough to see the three main valleys of western Bhutan, and this listing offers them as a private tour with a licensed guide. It runs from Paro to Thimphu, Punakha and back to Paro, with the Tiger's Nest hike on the third day. GetYourGuide shows it from about US$507 per person, which is 441 euros on the page, and rates it 4.9 from 14 reviews. The price covers hotels, full board, transport, the guide and the entrance fees, but not the visa and the daily sustainable development fee.

The first day begins at Paro airport, from where you are driven to Thimphu, the capital, which the page describes as famous for its beauty and for having no traffic lights. On the way you visit the historic iron bridge, built in the fourteenth century by the Tibetan bridge builder Thangthong Gyalpo. In Thimphu you see the Buddha Dordenma, one of the largest seated Buddha statues in the world, with a view over the valley, and the Simply Bhutan museum, where you learn about local customs, traditional clothing and the distilling of ara, the rice wine. The day ends at Tashichho Dzong, the fortress of the capital.

The second day is a day trip from Thimphu to Punakha. You drive up to the Dochula Pass for views of the Himalayan ranges and the 108 stupas, then go on to Punakha, where you walk through the rice paddies to Chimi Lhakhang, the temple of fertility known for its phallic symbols. You visit Punakha Dzong, which the page considers the most beautiful fortress in Bhutan, and walk on the Punakha suspension bridge, the longest in the country, over the Po Chhu river. In the evening you return to Thimphu for the night.

On the third day you drive from Thimphu to Paro for the hike to the Tiger's Nest. The page calls the temple a sacred site perched on a cliff, with views and a deep spiritual atmosphere, and presents the hike as a must for any visitor. After the climb, the programme offers a traditional hot stone bath, a practice said to ease aches and pains. The listing says the bath costs US$20 extra, is optional, and can be paid directly by you. You end the day with a relaxed walk in the town of Paro.

The last day is simple: a peaceful breakfast and the transfer to Paro airport for your flight. The page invites you to reflect on a journey in a land where tradition and tranquillity meet. The itinerary has a night in Thimphu on the first two nights and a night in Paro on the third, since the second day returns to Thimphu after Punakha, so you avoid changing hotels more than necessary.

The accommodation is described as premium 3-star hotels certified by the DOT, the Department of Tourism. Meals are on a half-board basis according to the headline, but the inclusions list says breakfast, lunch and dinner in buffet form, which means full board. Mineral water is offered during the day, and tea, snacks and extra drinks are paid separately. Ask the operator for the names of the hotels in each town.

The fees that are not in the price matter. The listing states that the visa fee of US$40 and the sustainable development fee of US$100 per person per night are not included, though the operator offers help with both. For a four-day stay with three nights, the fee comes to US$300 per person, plus the visa, so the real cost of the trip is about US$850 per person before flights, tips and extras. Plan your budget with that figure.

Documents are required. The page says that your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date you leave Bhutan, and that children under 18 without a passport need their original birth certificate. International flights are not included, and flights to Paro are limited, so confirm your flight first and then the tour. The operator handles the visa, which usually needs a few working days.

The Tiger's Nest hike is the physical challenge. The path climbs steadily for several hours, and altitude and weather matter, so wear sturdy shoes, carry water and take it slowly. The page does not give the length of the hike or the time needed, so ask the operator, and ask about the option of a pony for part of the way. Alcohol and drugs are not allowed.

Spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November, are the best seasons for the views, with clear skies over the Himalaya. In winter the days can be bright and the nights cold, and the monsoon of summer hides the mountains. Bring layers, a rain jacket and a hat, and cover your arms and legs when you enter a temple or a dzong.

Choose this tour if you want a shorter, better-priced introduction to Bhutan, with a private guide and a good hotel standard, and you accept the daily fee as an extra. For more time in the country, the five-day tour adds a second night in Paro and a longer drive, and the cost per day is similar.
