Private Angkor Wat Sunrise Jeep Tour
A vintage open-air jeep before dawn, Angkor Wat at sunrise and the Bayon with a licensed guide

What makes this different
Sunrise at Angkor Wat is one of the best-known moments of a visit to Cambodia, and this tour makes the early start part of the experience: you ride in a vintage open-air jeep through the quiet roads of Siem Reap, accompanied by a licensed English-speaking temple guide. The listing calls it a private sunrise jeep adventure, and the price is quoted per group of up to two people. GetYourGuide showed US$150 per group in October 2026, and the operator is Jeep Tour Siem Reap Angkor.
You are collected at your hotel before dawn and driven to Angkor Wat, with the aim of arriving before the crowds. You watch the sun rise behind the towers of the temple. Afterwards the tour continues with a private visit to Angkor Wat and the Bayon, with the guide adjusting the pace to your interests and explaining Khmer history, architecture and culture. Cold water and towels are provided, and you return to your hotel before the heat of the day. The whole outing lasts about five and a half hours.
Angkor Wat was built in the early twelfth century as a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu, and it became a Buddhist site over time. The building faces west, which means that at sunrise the sun rises behind the temple, and the towers appear in silhouette against the colour of the sky. The classic view is from the pond to the left of the entrance causeway, where the towers reflect in the water. Most visitors gather there, so the arrival time matters. The Angkor ticket office opens in the early hours, so buy the pass in advance if you can, and ask the operator whether your guide can help with it.
The price includes the pickup and drop-off, the jeep and driver, the licensed guide, and the water and towels. The Angkor Temple Pass, US$37 per person, is required and is not included. Meals, breakfast and tips are also extra. The dress code is smart casual, with shoulders and knees covered. The tour is not wheelchair accessible and is not suitable for babies under one year.
What most sunrise tours do not tell you is how the sunrise actually behaves. The sky does not always light up in dramatic colour. On clear days the colours build slowly and peak a little before and after the sun clears the horizon, while on cloudy or hazy mornings the light is flatter. The sunrise depends on the weather and may not be visible on cloudy or rainy days. In the rainy season from about May to October, mornings are often overcast, while the dry months from November to February give the best chance of clear skies and cooler air.
After sunrise the day becomes a visit to the temple itself, and many of the early crowd leave for breakfast. That is the moment when the galleries are quiet, and a guide can explain the bas-reliefs, the three tiers and the symbolism of the central tower. The Bayon, with its large stone faces, is lovely in morning light and less crowded than it will be later. Breakfast is not included, so ask the driver to stop at a cafe, or bring something light to eat.
The open-air jeep is part of the charm, but it is also exposed. Bring a light jacket for the pre-dawn ride, since it can feel cool, and a scarf for dust. Carry a small torch or use your phone for the dark approach, wear closed shoes for the stone steps and bring a cap for the later sun. Keep water close, since the heat builds quickly after sunrise.
To get the most from the morning, agree the plan with your guide the evening before. Confirm the pickup time, which is usually well before dawn, decide whether you prefer the classic reflection-pond view or a quieter spot, and ask what happens if cloud makes the sunrise disappointing. Many guides then suggest moving straight to the Bayon or to a temple where early light is soft. Bring cash for the temple pass, if it has to be bought on the spot, and for breakfast. A scarf protects your face from dust in the open jeep, and a spare layer is useful for the cool air before sunrise.
Do not forget the walk. After the sunrise, the interior of Angkor Wat involves steps, uneven stone and a steep climb if you choose to go up to the top level, where there are limits on numbers and dress. Wear shoes that grip, take your time on the stairs and check with your guide whether the upper tier is open that day. A short rest in the shade of a gallery is a good use of the cool morning.
The tour suits couples and solo travellers who want the early start and a different way to arrive. For a longer visit across several days, the private 2-day Angkor temples tour on this site covers the other major temples.
