Komodo Dragon Trek & Pink BeachPrivate Boat
The world's largest lizard and one of its seven pink beaches
What makes this different
Komodo National Park requires a licensed boat, a ranger, and the understanding that the dragons are not a managed attraction: they range freely, hunt actively, and approach the ranger station with the unhurried authority of an apex predator.
Your private boat departs Labuan Bajo at dawn, reaching Rinca Island in time for the morning when dragons are most active. The ranger leads your group along a circuit through dry savannah and lontar palm groves, known dragon territories, pausing to observe juveniles in trees, adults resting in the shade of huts, and occasionally a large male crossing the path without particular interest in your presence.
Afternoon takes you to Pink Beach on Komodo Island. The pink colouring comes from fragments of red foraminifera, tiny reef organisms, mixed into the white sand. The snorkelling directly off the beach accesses reef walls at five to fifteen metres with sea turtles, Napoleon wrasse, and staghorn coral that the rest of the park's marine traffic doesn't reach.
Komodo dragons are the world's largest living lizards, growing up to around three metres and weighing well over seventy kilograms. Their bite carries venom as well as bacteria, and they hunt deer, wild pigs and water buffalo by ambush. They can run fast over short distances, and they are dangerous. The rangers who lead every walk carry forked sticks, and their instructions must always be followed: stay together, keep a safe distance and never approach a dragon. Anyone with an open wound should tell the ranger before the walk.
The visit begins at 6:00 AM at Labuan Bajo harbour. The boat crosses to Rinca Island, around two hours away, which is closer to the mainland and has a compact area where dragons are often seen. The circuit, of one to two hours, passes through dry savannah, forest and hills. Dragons are most active in the cooler hours of the morning, though they are often seen resting near the ranger station or the kitchen, where the smell of food attracts them.
The afternoon is at Pink Beach, on the coast of Komodo Island, one of the few beaches in the world with pink sand. The colour is subtle in some light, and most vivid at the water's edge, where the wet sand glows. The reef just offshore is excellent for snorkelling, with clear water, coral and a variety of fish, and you may see turtles and rays. The current can be strong in places, so follow your guide's advice.
The park charges entry fees and other fees for ranger services, snorkelling and photography, and the rules and prices have changed several times in recent years, so check the current requirements. Fees for entry are included in the price. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a national park, and the number of visitors is managed to protect the animals and the reef.
The dry season, from April to November, is the best time to visit, with calm seas and clear skies. In the wet season, from December to March, the sea can be rough, and some trips are cancelled.
Wear a hat, sun protection, closed shoes for the walk and swimwear. Bring water, insect repellent and a light jacket for the boat, which can be breezy.
The trip lasts around ten hours. A private chartered boat with a captain, a licensed national park ranger, snorkelling equipment, lunch on board, entry fees and life jackets are included. Transfers to Labuan Bajo harbour are not.
