Private 2-Day Hue to Phong Nha Cave Tour
From Da Nang over the Hai Van Pass to the Imperial City of Hue and a boat trip to Phong Nha Cave, with a private car and driver

What makes this different
Central Vietnam is a long ribbon of coast, mountains and old capitals, and this two-day private tour crosses it from Da Nang to Hue and on to Quang Binh. It is a driving tour, with a private air-conditioned car and an English-speaking driver, and it is useful for travellers who want to reach both Hue and the Phong Nha caves without arranging trains, taxis and tickets separately. GetYourGuide showed US$169 per person in October 2026.
Day 1 begins at your hotel in Da Nang. The car crosses the Hai Van Pass, one of Vietnam's most scenic mountain roads, whose name means Pass of the Ocean Clouds, with a stop for views of the mountains and coast, then continues to Lap An Fishing Village beside Lap An Lagoon, where you can see fishing and oyster farming. In Hue you visit Khai Dinh Tomb, known for its mix of Vietnamese and European influences, and the Imperial City, the former political and cultural centre of the Nguyen Dynasty, and you have a local lunch. The route continues north to Hien Luong Bridge and the Ben Hai River, and the day ends in Dong Hoi at the 4-star Red Hotel Quang Binh.
The history along this road is as important as the scenery. Hue was the capital of the Nguyen emperors, the last imperial dynasty of Vietnam, from the early nineteenth century until 1945, and its citadel and royal tombs are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Khai Dinh's tomb, built in the 1920s, is one of the last and most unusual of them, with an interior covered in glass and ceramic mosaic. The Hien Luong Bridge and the Ben Hai River mark the old border between North and South Vietnam, which followed the seventeenth parallel from 1954 until reunification in 1975, so you cross a landmark of the country's divided past.
On Day 2, after breakfast at the hotel, you drive to Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park and take a boat on the Son River to Phong Nha Cave, whose limestone formations include stalactites and stalagmites. The park, a UNESCO site as well, contains some of the largest caves in the world, and Phong Nha is the one most easily visited by boat. After a local lunch the car returns to Da Nang and drops you off at your hotel or another location you request.
The price covers the car and driver, tolls and parking, bottled water, sightseeing tickets, the hotel night, the boat trip, breakfast and lunch on both days. Dinner is not included, which leaves you free to choose where to eat in Dong Hoi, and tips are extra. The listing names a driver, not a guide, so do not expect commentary at the sights beyond what the driver can give. If you want the history explained, read a short guide to Hue beforehand or ask the driver to arrange a local guide at the Imperial City.
What most itineraries leave out is how long the road is. Da Nang to Hue takes around two to three hours with stops, and Hue to Dong Hoi is another long stretch, so the first day is mostly in the car. Leave Da Nang early, carry water and snacks, and expect to be tired by the time you reach the hotel. The cave boats depend on the water level, and in the rainy season from about September to December heavy rain can raise the river and close boat trips, so check the forecast and ask the operator about the plan if the cave is closed. Spring and summer are drier, with high heat in July and August.
The common mistakes are about timing and clothing. Visitors reach the Imperial City at noon, when the courtyards are hot and exposed. They wear sandals for the stairs of the tombs, forget a layer for the cool cave and arrive in Dong Hoi too late to enjoy the evening. Start early, wear comfortable shoes, and bring a camera and sunscreen.
The food along this road is a reason to take your time. Hue is known for bun bo Hue, a spicy beef noodle soup, and for a refined cuisine that began in the imperial kitchens, with small, delicate dishes. Lap An lagoon is known for its oysters, and Dong Hoi has fresh seafood on the coast. Since lunch is included but dinner is not, ask your driver to recommend a local restaurant for the evening in Dong Hoi, and try a Vietnamese coffee at one of the stops on the Hai Van Pass. Bring a light rain jacket, since the weather on the pass can change between sunshine and mist within an hour.
The operator is Foresttravel, and the only restriction named in the listing is for people over 95 years. The tour suits travellers who want a two-day sweep from Da Nang to Hue and the Phong Nha caves, with the logistics handled.
