Kashmir Dal Lake Houseboat, 3 Days
Two nights on a deluxe houseboat, a shikara ride, the Mughal Gardens and a day in Gulmarg or Pahalgam

What makes this different
This package puts a houseboat on Dal Lake at the centre of a three-day programme: two nights on a deluxe houseboat, a lake ride in a shikara, two sightseeing days by car and a choice of mountain excursion. A local English-speaking guide goes with you. GetYourGuide showed US$209 per person in October 2026.
The houseboats of Dal Lake are a Kashmiri tradition with a particular history. They are made of carved cedar and were built in part because outsiders were not allowed to own land in the region during colonial times, so visitors lived on the water instead. A houseboat has a sitting room, bedrooms and a dining room, often decorated with carved wood and carpets, and meals are served on board. The shikara is the small wooden gondola-style boat that carries people and goods across the lake, and a ride at dawn or dusk is the classic way to see the floating gardens and the mountains around the water.
On Day 1 a representative meets you at Srinagar Airport and takes you to the houseboat, where Kashmiri tea is served. The afternoon covers the Mughal Gardens by car and the Old City, including the Jamia Masjid, the Shah Hamdan Mosque and a heritage walk around the bazaar, and you have dinner on board. The Mughal Gardens, laid out in the seventeenth century, are terraced gardens with fountains and chinar trees overlooking the lake, and the two mosques show the region's wooden architecture. Day 2 is your choice of excursion. Option A is Gulmarg, which the listing describes as a place for trekking and the Gondola ride. Option B is Pahalgam, with its green meadows and a stroll by the Lidder River. In the evening you return to Srinagar for a one-hour shikara ride on Dal Lake and spend a second night on the houseboat. On Day 3 you transfer to the airport.
The price includes the airport transfers, two nights with breakfast and dinner, an air-conditioned sedan for the programme, the shikara ride, the sightseeing, the excursion, the guide and all entrance fees. Lunch, drinks, airfare, tips, personal expenses and travel insurance are extra. Two points need attention. The Gulmarg Gondola ride is subject to availability when you book, and the listing says the amount paid is refunded in full if tickets are unavailable. The type of houseboat can also vary from the ones shown in the pictures.
What most itineraries do not tell you is how much the season changes Kashmir. Spring, from April, brings tulips and blossom to the gardens, and summer from May to August is mild and green, which is the high season for Gulmarg meadows and Pahalgam. Autumn, in October and November, turns the chinar leaves red and gold, and the air is crisp. In winter Gulmarg is a ski destination with deep snow, but houseboats can be cold and some excursions may be closed by weather. Choose Gulmarg in summer for flowers and views, and in winter only if you want snow.
The listing does not state a group size, so ask whether the car and the guide are for your party alone. Local etiquette is conservative, so dress modestly at mosques and in the Old City, with covered shoulders and knees, and a scarf for women at religious sites. Kahwa, the saffron-and-spice green tea of the region, is served in many houses, and trying it is part of the experience.
Food is part of the stay. Kashmiri cooking is distinct from the rest of India, with rogan josh, a slow-cooked red lamb curry, and the wazwan, a multi-course feast served on special occasions, among the best-known dishes. The houseboat will serve dinner and breakfast, and noon chai, a pink salty tea, is worth trying. Papier-mâché, walnut woodcarving, saffron and pashmina are the usual purchases, so ask your guide how to recognise genuine pashmina before you buy. At dawn, Dal Lake has a floating vegetable market where boats trade produce, which you can see on an early shikara ride if you ask the houseboat owner to arrange it. Check with your mobile provider before you travel, because some foreign and prepaid SIM cards may not work in the region.
Season and hour change the comfort of the stay. Houseboats are heated in winter but can still be cool, and the lake can freeze at its edges in the coldest weeks, so bring warm layers if you travel from December to February. In summer the days are pleasant but the sun is strong at altitude. The shikara ride is best in the early morning or late afternoon, when the light is soft and the lake is calm, and the guide can suggest the best hour on your day.
