About this experience

What makes this different

The Gili Islands are three small islands off the north-west coast of Lombok, and many visitors cross on shared boats. This tour is a private version, with a dedicated speedboat for your group, a pickup in Lombok and a plan that combines snorkelling with a rest on the sand. The price is quoted per group of up to six people, not per person, and GetYourGuide showed US$364 in October 2026. The operator is Ocean Calling Retreats.

You are collected at your hotel or at the port in Lombok and cross to the islands by private speedboat. The listing covers Gili Air, Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan, with snorkelling on reefs where it promises colourful fish and sea turtles, a massage on the beach, and a return by speedboat at sunset. Snorkelling equipment, pictures and videos and the local guide fee are included.

Each island has a different character. Gili Trawangan is the largest and the liveliest, with restaurants, bars and dive shops along the east coast. Gili Meno is the smallest and quietest, with beaches, a bird sanctuary and a turtle hatchery. Gili Air is closest to Lombok and sits between the two in feel, with a local community and a relaxed beach scene. None of the islands has motor vehicles. People get around on foot, by bicycle or in a horse-drawn cart called a cidomo, which is part of why the islands feel calm. The sea crossing from Lombok takes only a short time by speedboat, which is why a half-day itinerary is possible.

A conservation donation is part of every booking. The money goes to turtle conservation in the Gili Islands, and each booking receives an e-certificate for adopting a baby turtle, named after you or someone you choose. Green turtles are seen in the shallows off the islands, and the snorkelling spots known for turtles can be busy, so a private boat lets you go early or late, when there are fewer people.

The listing contradicts itself in places, so ask the operator before you book. The description says the outing lasts six hours, while the notes say about eight hours. The highlights speak of a 60-minute massage, whereas the inclusions list a 30-minute one. Water, food and drinks are listed as not included, so bring what you need or plan to buy something on the islands. Tips are optional and personal expenses are extra. Bring swimwear, a towel, sunscreen, a hat and a waterproof bag.

What most guides do not say is how the sea changes the day. The dry season from about April to October gives the calmest and clearest conditions, with good visibility for snorkelling. In the wetter months the crossing can be rougher and visibility lower, and boats may be delayed. Seasickness medication helps if you are prone to it, and sitting towards the middle of the boat reduces the motion. Wear a rash guard, apply reef-safe sunscreen, and never touch the coral or the turtles, which are protected.

The common mistakes are about money and time. Visitors assume that food is included and arrive hungry, but the listing says it is not. Cash is needed on the islands for lunch and small purchases, and while Gili Trawangan has cash machines, they can run empty. They also try to fit all three islands into too short a time. Agree with the guide which island gets the most time, and whether you prefer snorkelling or a long lunch.

Think about the Lombok side as well. The boats usually leave from the north-west coast, near Bangsal harbour, which is around two hours from Lombok's airport and a shorter drive from Senggigi, so confirm your pickup time with the operator. Lombok is a mostly Muslim island with its own Sasak culture, and when you pass through villages on the way, modest dress is appreciated. Mount Rinjani, the volcano, often appears on the horizon on clear days. Leave early if you are staying in the south of the island, since the road is long, and keep a light cover-up for the boat, because spray and wind can make the crossing cool.

Ask your captain to explain how the day will run. The three islands are close together, but wind and tide can change which snorkelling spots are comfortable, and an early start usually brings calmer water. If you want a long lunch on Gili Trawangan or a quiet hour on Gili Meno, say so at the start, and the crew can fit the order of the stops around your preference. Keep your phone in a waterproof pouch for the underwater photographs.

The beach massage is a pleasant addition after the snorkelling, and the sunset return is a highlight when the weather allows. The tour suits couples, families and small groups that want to see more than one island without the logistics of public boats, and that prefer to set their own pace at each stop.
