About this experience

What makes this different

Sigiriya is the rock fortress that rises out of the forest in Sri Lanka's cultural triangle, and a balloon gives you a view of it from above. This is a two-day private trip from Colombo that builds around a sunrise balloon flight. It is seasonal, available from November to the end of April, and the listing advises booking well in advance because balloon rides in Sri Lanka are in high demand. GetYourGuide showed US$650 per person in October 2026, and the operator is Nelum Holidays and Tours (Pvt) Ltd.

On the first day you are collected from Colombo airport or your hotel, at a time confirmed according to your location, and driven to Sigiriya in a private air-conditioned car or van. On the way you visit the Dambulla Cave Temple and the Golden Temple, and in Sigiriya you take a village tour. In the afternoon a private 4x4 jeep takes you to Minneriya National Park. You spend the night in a 4-star hotel in Sigiriya or Dambulla, with breakfast and dinner included.

The second day starts early. Around 5.30 in the morning you arrive at the launch site, where tea or coffee and a breakfast box are served. The flight lasts about an hour and passes over lakes, jungle and villages, with the Sigiriya rock in the first light. The listing says the pilots and ground crew are experienced professionals, many with over twenty years of ballooning. After landing there is a glass of champagne or juice, water and cake, and the pilot hands each passenger a personal flight certificate. You are back at the hotel around nine, can have breakfast again, check out around noon and drive back to Colombo or to your next stop.

Sigiriya's fortress dates from the fifth century, when King Kasyapa built his palace on top of a granite column that rises roughly 180 metres above the plain, with gardens, ponds and the famous frescoes of the women on the rock face. Together with the Dambulla cave temples, which hold painted caves and many statues of the Buddha, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Minneriya National Park, where the afternoon jeep safari goes, is known for elephants, which gather around the reservoir in the dry months, and for birdlife. The Golden Temple at Dambulla, with its giant seated Buddha, is the modern landmark at the foot of the cave complex.

The price includes the private transport with an English-speaking driver, fuel, the hotel night with breakfast and dinner, the balloon flight, the safari and entrance tickets where applicable, plus insurance, taxes and service charges. Personal expenses and tips are extra. The listing marks the tour as not suitable for children under six, pregnant women, people with heart problems or wheelchair users.

What most itineraries leave out is how much the weather decides. Balloon flights depend on wind and visibility, and a flight can be delayed or cancelled at short notice. Ask the operator in advance what happens in that case: whether you get another morning, a refund or an alternative, since the programme is only two days. Plan for the possibility by choosing dates early in your trip rather than the last morning. Dress in layers, because the pre-dawn air is cool, and wear closed shoes for the landing, which can be in a field.

The schedule is demanding. You see a lot in a short time, with a long drive on the first day, a safari in the afternoon and a very early start the next morning. It suits travellers who want to see the highlights efficiently, not those who prefer to climb Sigiriya on foot, since the rock climb is not listed. For that, add a second night in the area.

Pack with the early start in mind. Bring a warm layer for the launch site, a hat, comfortable shoes and a small bag, and keep a charged phone or camera ready. Eat the breakfast box before the flight if you are prone to nausea, since the basket is steady but the take-off can feel unfamiliar. A modest outfit is needed for the temples at Dambulla, where shoulders and knees must be covered and shoes are removed, and a scarf is useful. Cash helps for small tips and for the village visit.

Think of the two days as a sequence of early and late hours. The first day is long on the road, the second begins in the dark, and the schedule works best if you rest on the evening between them. Keep your phone charged, avoid a heavy dinner and set a sensible bedtime so that the balloon flight is the highlight and not an effort.

Confirm your flight details a day or two before travel, including the pickup time and the contact number of the operator, so that nothing is left to chance on the morning of the flight.

It suits couples and families with older children who want one memorable morning and a comfortable overnight stay without planning the logistics.
