About this experience

What makes this different

Zhangjiajie is the national forest park in Hunan where tall sandstone pillars rise out of the forest, and the landscape is popularly known as the Avatar mountains, which is how this tour is named on GetYourGuide. The park is large and the main sites are busy. This is a private day, with a guide and a vehicle for your group alone, so the order of the stops and the pace are set around you rather than around a coach schedule. The operator is Better China Trip, and GetYourGuide showed US$255 per person in October 2026.

The park is part of the Wulingyuan Scenic Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992. Its more than three thousand quartz-sandstone pillars were formed by erosion over millions of years, and the film connection comes from one pillar that was renamed after the movie. That is the marketing hook, and the real draw is the scale: narrow stone columns, some of them around 200 metres tall, wrapped in forest and mist.

You are collected at your hotel in Zhangjiajie by a private vehicle with a driver, and your guide, who speaks English or Spanish, takes you into the national park. The price includes the park entrance ticket, the Bailong Elevator ticket and the Tianzi Mountain cable car ticket, which covers the main ways of moving up and across the park, so you do not buy or queue for them yourself. The Bailong Elevator is a glass lift built against a cliff face, and the Tianzi Mountain cable car carries you to a high plateau with viewpoints over the pillars. At the end of the day you are driven back to your hotel. The tour lasts about eight hours.

What most itineraries leave out is how much the weather controls the view. The pillars look best when cloud drifts between them, and they can disappear entirely in thick fog. Clear days after rain are often the best, and a guide who can swap the order of the stops depending on the sky is more valuable than one who sticks to a plan. The final route can change depending on ticket availability, weather and crowds.

Meals and drinks are not included, nor are personal expenses and tips, so plan to buy lunch in the park. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water. Wild macaques live in the park and will take food from visitors, so keep snacks in a closed bag. All Zhangjiajie attraction tickets are issued under real-name booking, so you must send passport details for every traveller after you book.

The common mistakes are about timing and expectations. Visitors arrive during China's national holiday in early October, when the park is crowded and queues for the lifts stretch for hours; the best months are usually April to June and September to early October outside the holiday, though weather is changeable all year. They also underestimate the distance. The park is large, there are long staircases, and a day goes quickly. The tour is not suitable for pregnant women, people with back problems or wheelchair users.

A private guide is useful here for two reasons. They know which viewpoints are worth the walk and which are repeated views from a different angle, and they can rearrange the day around the cloud. They also save time at the lifts and in finding the right bus, which is where independent travellers lose hours.

The park is divided into areas, and it helps to know their names. Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain, Golden Whip Stream and Huangshizhai are the main sectors, and each offers a different view: pillars from above, a long valley walk, or a plateau with lookouts. The listing does not name the stops, so ask your guide which sectors your day will cover and in which order. The glass bridge and Tianmen Mountain, which many visitors associate with Zhangjiajie, are separate attractions outside this ticket, and the separate Zhangjiajie listings on this site cover the glass bridge. Plan a rest at midday, because the walking can add up even with lifts, and eat early before the park canteens fill. A hat, a light rain jacket and a small day bag are the right kit, and a power bank helps for photographs.

Dress for the plateau, not the town. Temperatures on the high viewpoints are cooler than in the valley, the air is humid, and mist can make steps slippery, so a light waterproof layer and shoes with grip are worth packing. Keep your passport easily accessible, because the real-name ticketing means it may be checked at gates, and start early, since the lifts and cable car queue builds through the morning.

If you are also planning to see the limestone scenery of southern China, the private two-day Guilin and Yangshuo tour on this site covers the other well-known landscape of the country, with a river and rice terraces rather than sandstone pillars.
