About this experience

What makes this different

Mount Bromo and the Ijen crater are among the best-known sights of East Java, and they are not easy to reach on your own. This Viator listing links them on a private one-way tour from Yogyakarta to Bali, with transfers, accommodation, breakfast and entrance fees. Viator shows it from about US$394 per person, which is 343 euros on the page, and rates it 5.0 from 4 reviews. The operator is Ijenlandscape.

The first day is a long one. The driver picks you up at 7:00 at your accommodation in Yogyakarta, and the drive to Cemoro Lawang, the village near Bromo where you spend the night, takes about eight hours. If time allows, you can watch the sunset near the hotel: at 5:00 in the afternoon your driver takes you to a sunset point, reached by a short walk. You stay overnight with the operator's accommodation partner near Bromo, and breakfast is included.

The second day starts at 3:00 in the morning. A drive of about an hour takes you to the sunrise viewpoint over the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, where the itinerary advises you to photograph the registration number of your jeep at the parking area. The jeep then stops at the parking area, and you walk up to the crater, passing a Hindu temple and climbing a flight of 250 steps to the rim.

After Bromo, the journey continues towards Ijen, where you stay at the Ijenview hotel or at a riverside homestay. Breakfast is included. The listing gives long days of driving and trekking, so expect fatigue, and take advantage of the rest at the hotel. The page does not describe the rooms, so ask the operator about the standard and the bathrooms for the two nights.

The third day begins at midnight. You check out and drive for about two hours to the Ijen car park, and at about 2:00 in the morning you begin a trek of three kilometres uphill. The reward is the blue fire of the crater, which glows at night, and the dawn over the crater lake. The listing includes a gas mask, which you will need, since sulphur fumes at the crater can be hard on the lungs.

After the descent and breakfast, the tour goes to the ferry port at Ketapang, where you arrive at about 9:00. The operator's team takes care of the ferry ticket, and the vehicle crosses to Bali with you, then transfers you to your hotel. The page marks the accommodation of the third night as not included, since you sleep in Bali, so book your own hotel there.

The price covers a private vehicle with air conditioning, the pick-up in Yogyakarta, the drop-off in Bali, the accommodation of the first two nights with breakfast, lunch and dinner as set out in the programme, the gas mask and the entrance fees. Because it is a private tour, only your group takes part, and the pace and the stops are easier to adjust than on a group trip.

The programme is demanding. It includes a drive of eight hours, a start at 3:00 in the morning for Bromo, a night trek at Ijen starting at 2:00 and a ferry crossing, with only a few hours of sleep. People with heart problems or other serious medical conditions cannot take part, and the tour is not wheelchair accessible. Think carefully about your fitness before you book.

Bring warm clothes, since Bromo is cold before dawn, and sturdy shoes for the stairs and the crater path. A head torch is useful for the night climb at Ijen, and a scarf or a spare mask helps against the dust and the fumes. Keep your valuables with you, and take cash for tips and small purchases. Ask the operator whether any fee, such as the jeep at Bromo, is paid separately.

The season matters. The dry months, from April to October, give the clearest views of Bromo and the best conditions for the Ijen climb, while the rainy months can hide the sunrise and make the paths slippery. Ijen may be closed at short notice when volcanic activity rises, so confirm the status with the operator before your trip, and keep a day of margin.

Viator offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start, for a full refund. The tour has only four reviews, all five-star, so the rating is encouraging but limited, and it is worth asking the operator about recent trips and the condition of the vehicles. Confirmation is received at the time of booking.

Choose this tour if you want to cross East Java from Yogyakarta to Bali in one go, seeing two volcanoes on the way, without arranging transport yourself. For a shorter outing, a day trip to Bromo from Malang or a sunrise at Borobudur costs much less, and for a slower trip you can add nights.
