Khiva to the Aral Sea: Two-Day Private Muynak and Ustyurt Expedition
Savitsky Museum, Muynak's ship cemetery, the Ustyurt canyons and a night in a yurt camp near the Aral Sea

What makes this different
The one-day trip from Khiva to Muynak shows the ship cemetery but leaves out the landscape beyond it. This listing is the longer version: a two-day private expedition across Karakalpakstan that adds the Ustyurt Plateau and a night in a yurt camp near the Aral Sea. Visit Kharezm and Khiva operates it, and the GetYourGuide page marks it as a new activity with no reviews yet. The price is quoted per group of up to three people, and the guide speaks English, Russian and Turkish.
Day one begins early, with pickup between 6:00 and 6:30 in Khiva and a drive through the historic lands of Khorezm. The listing schedules a stop at the Savitsky Museum in Nukus at about 9:00, where you can see its collection of Russian avant-garde works and Karakalpak art. Around midday the car reaches Muynak, where the ship cemetery and the local history museum explain how a fishing port became a desert settlement. A traditional lunch is eaten in Muynak. In the afternoon, between about 15:00 and 16:30, the route enters the Great Ustyurt canyons, a plateau of cliffs, canyons and open horizons, and visits sites connected with the former fishing communities. The day ends at about 19:30 at the yurt camp near the Aral Sea, with dinner of Uzbek plov under the stars.
On day two, the programme starts with sunrise and a walk along the shore, followed by breakfast. The listing then names Kurgancha Kala, the remains of an ancient fortified settlement, and Kubla Ustyurt, a remote Soviet-era settlement and abandoned airfield. There is a lunch stop in Muynak at about 13:00, then the journey back towards Khorezm, with a stop at the Mizdakhan Necropolis, a place with layers of Zoroastrian and Islamic heritage, and at Chilpik Kala, an ancient Zoroastrian dakhma on a hill in the desert. The expedition ends with drop-off anywhere in Khiva.
The vehicles are specified. A comfortable Chevrolet Cobalt sedan carries you between Khiva and Muynak, and the remote section between Muynak and the yurt camp is completed in a 4x4 jeep. Luggage transportation is included, and the driver and guide is certified by the Ministry of Tourism of Uzbekistan. Pickup is not limited to Khiva, as the operator can collect guests from Nukus International Airport, Urgench International Airport or the railway station, and asks you to contact it by WhatsApp after booking to confirm the exact location and time.
The price was US$580 per group of up to three people on the GetYourGuide page when we checked in October 2026. It includes the private transport, the guide, the luggage transport and entrance tickets to museums, archaeological sites and fortresses. Note carefully that the night in the yurt camp, with dinner and breakfast, costs US$55 per person and is not part of the package price, and lunches are paid by you. The listing offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start for a full refund, and you can reserve now and pay later.
Prepare for a remote journey. Facilities at the camp are simple, nights in the desert are cold even after a hot day, and mobile coverage is patchy. Bring warm layers, a sun hat, water, comfortable shoes and a power bank. The tour is not suitable for children under seven, wheelchair users, visually impaired people, babies under one or people over 95. Alcohol, drugs and littering are not allowed.
Spring and autumn are the best seasons for the expedition. Summer is very hot, and winter is cold and windy, which can make the camp uncomfortable. Because the listing is new, it is wise to ask the operator for the latest information on the road conditions and the camp before you book.
The Ustyurt Plateau lies between the Aral Sea and the Caspian, a high, flat desert edged by steep cliffs known locally as chinks. The scenery is sparse and wide, with white and ochre cliffs, canyons cut by wind and water, and almost no people. Travelling across it needs a four-wheel-drive vehicle and an experienced driver, which is why the listing uses a jeep for this section. The light at dawn and dusk turns the cliffs gold and pink, and photographers should keep their cameras handy.
The Karakalpak people have their own language, close to Kazakh, and a culture shaped by life on the delta and the shore of the Aral Sea. Ask the guide about the region's history, the memory of the fishing years and the changes that followed. The night at the yurt camp is simple, with felt tents, mattresses and shared facilities, and a dinner of plov. Do not expect luxury, but do expect silence and an enormous sky. Bring a warm sleeping layer and a torch, and tell the operator about dietary needs.
The expedition suits adventurous travellers with a serious interest in the Aral Sea, Soviet history and desert landscapes. It is a demanding trip, with long days in vehicles, but it offers a view of Central Asia that most itineraries miss. Travellers who prefer comfort or have limited time may choose the one-day trip instead.
