Bukhara to Khiva: Desert Fortresses and Ichan Kala, Private Day Trip
Three Khorezm fortresses across the Kyzylkum, then four hours with a guide in Khiva's walled old town

What makes this different
The journey between Bukhara and Khiva crosses about five hundred kilometres of the Kyzylkum Desert, and most travellers make it by train or in a shared car without seeing much on the way. This listing turns the transfer into a sightseeing day. The car stops at three fortresses from the ancient Khorezm civilisation and ends in Khiva with a guided walk through the old town. The GetYourGuide page gives it a rating of 5.0 from two reviews, so it is a recent listing, and the price is quoted per group of up to three people.
The day begins with a pickup at your hotel in Bukhara and a drive in an air-conditioned vehicle with an English-speaking driver. The listing names three fortresses on the route. Kyzyl Kala, the Red Fortress, is a ruined mud-brick castle standing alone in the desert. Toprak Kala, which the page calls the former royal capital of the Khorezm kingdom, is a large archaeological site, and Ayaz Kala is a hilltop fortress with panoramic views across the desert. Together they reveal more than two thousand years of Central Asian history and give a sense of the scale of the oasis civilisation that once irrigated the region from the Amu Darya.
The route covers about 530 kilometres and usually takes nine to ten hours including sightseeing stops. That is a long time in a car, but the stops, the desert scenery and the chance to see places that few visitors reach make up for it. There is free time for a meal at a local restaurant when you arrive in Khiva, and the listing says that meals are not included.
The last part of the day is a guided walking tour of Ichan Kala, the walled inner town and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which lasts about four hours with a professional local guide. The listing names the landmarks: the Kalta Minor Minaret, famous for its turquoise tiles; the Kunya Ark fortress, the former residence of the rulers; the Muhammad Amin Khan Madrasa, one of the largest in Central Asia; the Juma Mosque, with its forest of carved wooden columns; the Tash Khauli Palace and its courtyards; and the Islam Khoja Minaret, the tallest in Khiva. You also walk through caravanserais, bazaars and workshops. Afterwards the driver takes you to your hotel in Khiva.
The price was US$198 per group of up to three people on the GetYourGuide list when we checked in October 2026. The package includes the private one-way transfer, the visits to the three fortresses, pickup in Bukhara, drop-off in Khiva, the professional English-speaking driver and the air-conditioned vehicle. The page states that entrance tickets are not included, so budget for the fortress tickets and for Ichan Kala, along with meals, beverages and personal expenses. The listing offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start for a full refund, with the option to reserve now and pay later.
Plan for the length of the day. It lasts fourteen hours, and arrival in Khiva is in the evening, so your walking tour may happen at dusk, which gives good light but a hurried pace. If you want a calmer visit to Ichan Kala, arrange an extra night in Khiva and ask the operator whether the walking tour can be moved to the following morning. Tell the operator about your hotel in Khiva so the drop-off is smooth.
Bring a sun hat, sunscreen, water, comfortable shoes and modest clothing for religious buildings. Summer heat is extreme, and winter is cold. The tour is not suitable for children under six, wheelchair users, visually impaired people, babies under one or people over 95. Alcohol, drugs and littering are not allowed.
The Khorezm fortresses give a different picture from the famous Silk Road monuments. They were built from mud brick and rammed earth over many centuries of the first millennium, and they belonged to a state that controlled irrigated land along the Amu Darya. Ayaz Kala stands on a hill and has a wide view of the desert, while Toprak Kala is a large rectangle with the remains of a palace and temples, and Kyzyl Kala is a tall, eroded tower. The guide can explain what each was used for, and you should wear a hat and sturdy shoes, since the sites are exposed.
Make the most of Ichan Kala at the end of the day. The light in the evening is warm and the heat has eased, and the day-trippers have mostly gone, but the opening hours of the monuments are limited, so ask the guide which buildings can be entered and which are best seen from the outside. Carry cash in Uzbek som for the tickets, and consider buying a combined ticket that covers several monuments if one is offered. If you stay overnight, rise early for the walls and the minarets.
The tour suits travellers who are moving from Bukhara to Khiva anyway and who would like to turn a necessary transfer into a highlight. It suits history lovers, photographers and anyone who enjoys desert landscapes. For those who would rather travel by train in comfort, the high-speed rail connection is quicker, but it misses the fortresses.
