Nubra Valley Two-Day Private Tour from Leh
Over Khardung La to the Hunder dunes, Diskit Monastery and a night in a Nubra camp

What makes this different
The Nubra Valley lies north of the Ladakh range, reached only by crossing Khardung La. It is a green valley between high desert mountains, with villages, apricot orchards and a stretch of sand dunes, and it has long been a stop on the old caravan routes between Ladakh and Central Asia. This listing is a two-day private tour from Leh, with one night in the valley. Agora Voyages operates it, and it is a new listing on GetYourGuide with no reviews yet. The price is per person, and the tour is for your own group.
The first day is a long drive. The road climbs from Leh over Khardung La, which the listing describes as one of the world's highest motorable roads, then descends into the valley. The scenery changes from bare rock and snow to river flats and fields as you drop. The valley's main attraction is Hunder, where a belt of cold desert dunes lies in the shadow of the mountains. Double-humped Bactrian camels graze in the area, and the listing mentions a sunset over the dunes as one of the highlights. Camel rides are available at the dunes and are charged separately.
Two monasteries are on the programme. Diskit Monastery is the oldest in the Nubra Valley, according to the listing, and it stands on a hill above the valley floor with a large Maitreya statue that looks out over the river. Samstanling Gompa is a quieter monastery set among fields near Sumur, with a community of monks who maintain the temple. At both, visitors are asked to dress modestly, walk clockwise around shrines and ask before taking photographs. A local guide explains the symbolism of the murals and the role of the monastery in village life.
The programme also takes in Panamik, known for its natural hot springs and tranquil setting, before the return journey to Leh. The listing says travellers stay overnight in Nubra Valley at a 3-star hotel or camp, with Magpie Camp or Nubra Ethnic Camp named as examples of the accommodation used, or similar. The package includes daily breakfast, but lunches and dinners are not covered unless specified, so budget for meals at the camp or in nearby restaurants.
The inclusions are generous for a private tour. The price was US$432 per person on GetYourGuide when we checked in October 2026, and covers assistance on arrival and departure, one night's accommodation, daily breakfast, a private non-air-conditioned vehicle, the inner-line permits for Nubra Valley, an English-speaking local guide, monastery entrance fees, bottled water, tolls, parking, driver allowance and fuel, and government taxes. Flights, personal expenses, camera or video charges at monasteries, camel rides, travel insurance and any sightseeing not in the itinerary are extra. Free cancellation applies up to 24 hours before the start for a full refund.
Prepare for altitude and cold. Khardung La and the Nubra approach reach very high altitudes, so spend at least two days in Leh to acclimatise before you go. The listing says the tour is unsuitable for people with mobility impairments, heart problems, respiratory issues or altitude sickness. Bring warm clothing, sunglasses, a camera, water and comfortable shoes, together with an ID card or a copy of your passport for the permit checks. Drones are not allowed, and the listing asks visitors not to litter.
The permit system is part of travelling here. Foreigners need an inner-line permit for Nubra, and the listing says this is included in the package, so the operator arranges it for you. Carry your original passport and keep copies of the permit at each checkpoint. Phone coverage in the valley is patchy, and ATMs are few, so bring cash for meals and camel rides.
The best months are June to September, when the roads are open and the valley is green. Nights are cold even in summer, particularly at a camp, so bring a warm sleeping layer. In winter the pass may close for periods and the valley is very cold.
The valley has long been part of the Silk Road trade route. Traders crossed the high passes on foot with ponies and double-humped camels, carrying silk, tea, salt and carpets between Leh and Yarkand, and the Bactrian camels at Hunder are descended from those caravan animals. At the dunes, the wind builds ripples in the sand, and the mountains behind turn pink and gold at sunset, which is why the evening is the best time for photographs. Bring a scarf for sand and wind, and accept that the weather can turn quickly at altitude.
Plan your evening at the camp. Nights in the valley are cold, even in summer, so bring a warm layer, a hat and warm socks. Meals are usually simple, with rice, dal, vegetables and tea, and vegetarian options are easy to find. Bring a power bank and download maps in advance, since electricity may be limited at times and mobile coverage is poor in parts of the valley. Wake early for the light, since the mountains are at their clearest before the wind rises.
The tour suits travellers who have time for a night away from Leh and who want to see a very different landscape from the Indus Valley, with dunes, camels, monasteries and high passes in one trip. It suits couples, friends and small families with teenagers, and anyone who wants a private vehicle and permits arranged by an operator. Those short of time may prefer the one-day Khardung La excursion, while those with a week can add Pangong Lake.
