About this experience

What makes this different

Mutianyu and Badaling are the most visited sections of the Great Wall near Beijing. Jinshanling is the one people choose when they would rather walk than queue. The listing describes it as less developed and a favourite with photographers and hikers. The listing counts 67 watchtowers along it, built in different styles at intervals of about 150 metres. GetYourGuide's Great Wall private-tour listing showed US$196 per person in October 2026.

Your guide and a private car collect you from your hotel lobby at a time you choose. The drive to Jinshanling takes about two and a half hours, and the guide uses it to explain the history and stories of the wall while you watch the countryside outside Beijing change. On arrival there is no fixed programme. You decide how far to hike and how long to stay, and the guide goes with you, takes photographs of your group and answers questions on the way.

The tour is sold with options, including combination days that pair the wall with another sight; choose these on the booking page, because the price and the details change with the combination. The highlights mention a local lunch, but the entrance ticket and meal arrangements vary by option, so read what your chosen version includes before you pay. The whole day takes nine to ten hours.

Jinshanling lies in Hebei province, a little over two hours by road north-east of Beijing, which is why the day is long. The wall here was rebuilt in the Ming dynasty, and the listing traces its first construction to the sixth century. It is often walked towards Simatai, the next section, a route that many hikers rank among the best on the wall, but how far you can go depends on the option you book and on conditions at the time, so confirm the plan with your guide. The long ridge, with its towers climbing and falling along the hills, is the reason the section is so photogenic, and it is at its best in clear light, early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

What most itineraries leave out is the physical reality. The Great Wall here is not a paved promenade. The steps are steep and uneven, some bricks are worn or loose, and in places the wall is partly restored and partly in its ruined state. Railings are limited. Take your time on the descents, use your hands on the steepest steps and do not stand on the edge for photographs, particularly in wind. The shade is scarce, so a hat, sunglasses and plenty of water matter, and the sun is strong even on cool days.

The seasons shape the walk. Spring and autumn are the best, with clear air and moderate temperatures, and autumn colours the hills in October. Summer can be very hot, with sudden storms, so start early and carry rain protection. Winter is cold and windy but offers sharp views and few visitors, and snow can make the steps slippery. Weather affects the visibility in the haze, so check the forecast and choose a clear day for photography. Your guide can suggest whether to walk east or west, and how long to allow for the return.

Bring shoes with a good grip, water and sun protection. The wall here is hilly and parts are steep. Because the tour is private, the pace is yours. Bring a light daypack, a snack, a jacket for the wind on the ridge, and your passport or a copy, since entry checks sometimes ask for ID. If you travel with children or older relatives, tell your guide the limits so that the route can be planned accordingly.

Choose the timing that suits your goal. For photographs, aim for the morning, when the light is clear and the ridge is quiet, or the late afternoon, when it turns warm. Midday brings the most visitors and the strongest sun. If you plan a long hike towards Simatai, tell the guide early so that the pace and return are planned, and bring a snack, since there are few places to buy food along the wall. A pair of gloves helps on cool days, when the stone is cold and rough.

Respect the wall. Stay on the path, do not carve or write on the stones and carry out your rubbish. Some sections are partly restored and others are original ruin, and the unrestored parts can be unstable. Follow your guide's advice about where it is safe to climb, and avoid the edges in wind.

Agree the meeting time and a fallback plan with your guide in case of poor weather or heavy traffic leaving Beijing, and keep a phone number to call.

It suits travellers who have already seen the busy sections or who want space for photography and hiking. If you want the easiest approach, with cable-car access, a Mutianyu day is the simpler choice.
