Travel that gives more than it takes
Private travel is inherently resource-intensive. Our job is to ensure it's also honest, locally beneficial, and structured around the long-term health of the places and cultures it passes through.
This page is our policy — not marketing. It describes what we do, what we refuse to do, and the partners we work with. If something on it isn't true, we expect to hear about it.
Wildlife — no exceptions
We operate a hard no on any experience that involves captive wildlife performing unnatural behaviours, or animals used as photo props. This rules out elephant riding, civet coffee farms, tiger temples, and dancing monkeys — common offerings across Asia that continue because tourists pay for them. The only elephant experiences we arrange are sanctuary-model: rescued elephants, no riding, no performance, the animals move freely. We turn down bookings rather than compromise on this.
- All elephant partners certified sanctuary-model (no riding, no chains)
- No bird shows, tiger temples, or performing animal experiences
- Marine experiences reviewed for reef impact and boat number limits
- Annual review of all wildlife partner policies
Community — money where it matters
Large hotels and international tour operators extract most of the economic value from a trip before a traveller even arrives in a country. We deliberately route spending through local economies: family-owned ryokans over international chains where quality is equivalent, locally-trained guides over imported ones, market dinners over hotel restaurants, craft village visits that sell directly rather than through intermediary shops. It's slower to arrange and the margin is lower. We do it anyway.
- Minimum 60% of recommended accommodation is locally-owned
- All guides are nationals of their country, trained in-country
- Cooking classes, craft workshops, and market visits support local families directly
- We don't use third-party ground operators who sub-contract to underpaid freelancers
Environment — honest about impact
Private travel has a larger footprint than mass tourism, and we don't pretend otherwise. A private guide, a dedicated vehicle, and a boutique guesthouse use more resources per person than a coach tour and a chain hotel. Our response to this is to be honest about it, to choose accommodation partners with genuine sustainability credentials, and to offset the carbon of every trip we arrange at 110% of calculated emissions — through certified reforestation and clean cooking projects across Asia. We send every client their trip's carbon figure before departure.
- Full carbon calculation and offset at 110% for every trip arranged
- Carbon offsets via Gold Standard-certified reforestation projects
- Accommodation partners reviewed annually for waste, energy, and water practices
- No single-use plastics in any Excurze-arranged picnic, excursion, or transfer
Culture — visitor, not tourist
Asia contains some of the most profound cultural and religious traditions on earth. They also bear the full weight of mass tourism: Angkor at midday, Fushimi Inari on a Saturday afternoon, a Balinese cremation ceremony with 300 cameras. Our role is to help travellers engage with culture honestly — with appropriate preparation, local context, and timing that respects the people whose culture it actually is. This means earlier departures, smaller groups, and guides who explain rather than simply perform.
- Pre-departure cultural briefings for all clients visiting religious or ceremonial sites
- Guides instructed to brief on photography etiquette and appropriate behaviour
- Ceremonies and private access arranged only with local community permission
- We don't include experiences that exploit cultural traditions for spectacle

Does sustainable travel cost more?
Not always — and not significantly when it does. Locally-owned accommodation is sometimes cheaper than international chains of equivalent quality. Private guides are usually locally trained regardless of price. Carbon offsetting adds around 1–2% to a trip cost and is included in our pricing.
How do you calculate the carbon footprint of a trip?
We use flight emission data from ICAO calculators, ground transport distances, and accommodation energy estimates. The total is shared with clients before departure. We offset at 110% — the extra 10% accounts for calculation uncertainty.
What if I want to see elephants in Thailand?
We love this question. We arrange full-day visits to Elephant Nature Park near Chiang Mai — rescued elephants, bathing, feeding, walking alongside them in forest. No riding, no performance, no chains. It's one of the most moving experiences we offer.
Do you vet your accommodation partners for sustainability?
Yes — annually. We check waste management, energy source, water conservation, and local employment. We give preference to Travelife-certified properties and locally-owned guesthouses. We've removed properties from our recommendations that failed review.
Can I request a fully carbon-neutral itinerary?
All our trips are offset at 110%. If you want to go further — flight-free itineraries, train routes instead of short-haul flights, vegan meal options — tell your concierge. We've built trip-by-train itineraries across Japan, Vietnam, and India for clients who requested it.
