Mount Fuji Hang Gliding and ATV Private Day
A private ten-hour day from Tokyo: lakeside viewpoint, forest ATV ride and a tandem hang-gliding flight

What makes this different
Many day trips to Mount Fuji show the mountain from the ground and stop there. This one looks at it three ways: from a lakeshore, from a forest trail and from the air. It is a private day from Tokyo, about ten hours long, and the activities mean it suits people who would rather do something than sit on a coach. GetYourGuide's Tokyo listing showed US$576 per person, marked down from US$720, in October 2026.
The day starts early at your Tokyo hotel, with private travel to the Fuji Five Lakes region. The first stop is Oishi Park beside Lake Kawaguchiko, a short walk along the shore with the mountain across the water. Then you move to the active part of the day, an ATV session in the forest. Guests aged 16 and over learn the basics of a four-wheel ATV and then ride a dedicated off-road course with slopes, bumps and uneven ground. Younger eligible guests ride in an eight-wheel ATV driven by an instructor.
The centre of the day is a tandem hang-gliding flight from the Oshino area. After a safety briefing you fly together with an experienced instructor, launching from a point with a drop of about 360 metres. Mount Fuji, at 3,776 metres the highest mountain in Japan, is the backdrop. The last stop is Oshino Hakkai, a village of spring-fed ponds with a view of the mountain.
Two cautions apply. Hang gliding depends on wind and weather, so ask the operator how a cancelled flight is handled before you book. And meals, fees and extras are not spelled out here, so check exactly what your price includes on the booking page.
The Fuji Five Lakes (Kawaguchiko, Saiko, Shojiko, Motosuko and Yamanakako) lie at the northern foot of the mountain, and Oshino Hakkai, the eight ponds, is fed by water that filters down through it. Fujisan was added to UNESCO's World Heritage list in 2013 as a cultural landscape, and Oshino Hakkai is one of its component sites. Views of the summit depend on cloud, and in the rainy season and summer haze Fuji is often hidden, so ask about the plan for a cloudy day and treat a clear view as a bonus.
What most visitors do not realise is how much the season matters. Fuji is clearest from late autumn to early spring, especially in the morning, when the air is dry and cold, and the best chance of a sharp view is between December and February. The rainy season in June and July brings cloud and drizzle, summer is hazy, and typhoons between August and October can cancel flights altogether. Autumn colour around Lake Kawaguchiko peaks in November, and cherry blossom arrives in mid-April. Flying in strong wind is unsafe, so the schedule is always at the mercy of the sky.
Prepare for the activities. Hang gliding is a tandem flight in which you hang in a harness beneath a wing, and the instructor controls the glider. It suits people who are comfortable with heights and able to follow instructions for take-off and landing, which involve a short run. Operators usually have limits on weight, age and health, so read them first and tell the operator about any back, heart or joint conditions. Wear closed, sturdy shoes, long trousers and a light jacket, since the air is cool at altitude, and secure your belongings, because loose items can be lost in the air. For the ATV session, long sleeves protect against mud and branches.
Allow for the possibility of a disappointing sky. If the wind rises or cloud covers the mountain, the operator may offer the ATV and the lake instead, a refund or another date, and it is worth asking in advance which. Start the day with a good breakfast and carry water, a camera strap and a small first-aid item for blisters. Photographs from the air are usually taken by the instructor or an action camera, so ask what is available and whether there is a fee.
Plan for the length of the day. Ten hours with a drive in each direction means you will be tired by the evening, so avoid a late dinner reservation in Tokyo, and eat a sensible lunch near the lake. If you are travelling with a non-participating companion, ask the operator whether they can watch the ATV and the landing from a safe spot, and whether the lakeside walk and the ponds can be extended for them. Sun protection is needed even on cloudy days at altitude, and a hat that stays on in wind is better than a cap that flies off.
The ATV and hang-gliding parts have age and fitness limits, so read them first and tell the operator about any health issue. If you want Fuji without the adrenaline, a lakeside day with a private driver is a calmer way to see it.
