About this experience

What makes this different

Khao Yai is Thailand's oldest national park and a long drive north-east of Bangkok. This two-day tour makes it practical: a private transfer from your hotel, trekking in small groups with an English-speaking guide, and a hotel stay if you choose the option. The listing marks it as a tour with private transfers rather than a private tour, so the treks themselves are in small groups. GetYourGuide showed US$314 per person in October 2026, and the operator is Amazing Asia Tours.

The programme is built around wildlife and the evening. You trek through dry evergreen forest, where gibbons, monkeys and hornbills live, and drive to the highest mountain of the park for a viewpoint. In the evening there is a stakeout at the salt licks where wild elephants may come, and the tour watches the millions of bats that leave their cave at dusk in a snake-like stream across the sky. Sightings of wildlife are not guaranteed.

Khao Yai was established in the early 1960s as the country's first national park, and together with neighbouring forests it forms a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park covers a mix of evergreen forest, grassland and hills, and it is one of the best places in Thailand to see large mammals in the wild. Gibbons announce themselves with loud calls in the early morning, hornbills fly with a heavy whooshing of wings, and wild elephants live in the park in small herds. The bat flight at dusk is one of the park's famous sights, as a colony of bats leaves a cave in a long stream that can last for twenty minutes or more. For a wildlife trip within reach of Bangkok, it is hard to beat.

The price includes the private transfers, a professional driver, insurance, the small-group treks, the guide, lunch on Day 2, water, snacks and fresh fruit on both days, leech socks and, in the rainy season, a raincoat. If you select the accommodation option, the hotel stay and breakfast on Day 2 are included. The standard hotel is Eco Valley Resort and the premium hotel is The Peri Khao Yai, with a comparable alternative if there is no availability. Bring comfortable shoes and swimwear.

What most itineraries leave out is how to behave on a wildlife trek. Stay behind your guide, keep your voice low, wear dull colours and avoid perfume. Do not leave the path, and never feed or approach animals. Leech socks are included for a reason: leeches are common in the wet season and are harmless but annoying, and they can be kept off with long trousers tucked into the socks and insect repellent on the shoes. Stakeouts at the salt licks demand patience, because the animals come on their own schedule, and a quiet group sees more.

The seasons shape the experience. The cool, dry months from November to February are the most comfortable for trekking, with clearer views and fewer leeches, and mornings can be cold at altitude, so bring a warm layer. March to May is hot and dry, and animals gather near water. The rainy season from June to October makes the forest lush and the waterfalls full, but trails are muddy and wildlife is harder to spot. Check conditions with the operator before you choose your dates.

The drive from Bangkok takes around three hours each way, so an early start is needed on the first day. Khao Yai is also a wine and farm-stay region, with vineyards and resorts that attract weekend visitors from the capital, so book your hotel option early for weekends and holidays. Travel insurance that covers trekking is wise.

A few preparations make the wildlife more likely to appear. Pack a light fleece for the evening at the salt licks, where the air can be cool and still, a small torch with a red filter, binoculars if you have them, and a hat for the day treks. Avoid strong perfume and bright colours, drink water regularly, and be patient, since the best sightings often come after long quiet waits. If you choose the hotel option, ask for dinner arrangements, because the schedule keeps you in the park until after dark. Check that your travel insurance covers trekking and wildlife areas.

Be ready for a late finish. The evening activities extend into the dark, and the bat flight and elephant stakeout happen at dusk, so dinner is later than usual. Keep a light snack in your bag, wear layers and bring a headtorch for the walk back to the vehicle. If you are sensitive to cold, a hat and gloves are not excessive on a clear winter night.

The listing does not state the group size for the treks or the guide's other languages, so ask the operator if this matters to you. The tour suits travellers who want a taste of Thailand's forests from Bangkok and are comfortable with trekking and an early start.
