About this experience

What makes this different

Kanchanaburi is about three hours west of Bangkok, which is long enough that a day trip leaves little time on the ground. This two-day, one-night private tour spends a night there, with a private air-conditioned vehicle and a local driver collecting you from your Bangkok hotel. GetYourGuide showed US$171 per person in October 2026.

The town is known for its place in the history of the Second World War. The Death Railway, formally the Thailand-Burma Railway, was built in 1942 and 1943 by the Japanese army using Allied prisoners of war and Asian labourers, and thousands of them died during the construction. The Bridge on the River Kwai, made famous by a film, is one of its best-known structures. The railway is both a transport route and a memorial, and the stretch from Tham Krasae Station runs along a wooden viaduct built into the cliff.

On Day 1, after the drive, you float on a bamboo raft along the river and ride a short stretch of the Death Railway from Tham Krasae Station, a line cut into the cliffside during the Second World War. You then visit the Kanchanaburi Skywalk and the Bridge on the River Kwai, with a short city tour before you check in to your hotel. On Day 2 you leave in the morning for Erawan National Park, whose seven-tiered waterfalls have emerald pools you can swim in. After lunch you visit Mallika R.E. 124, a recreated Siamese town, then Wat Tham Suea above the rice fields and limestone mountains, and Meena Cafe, which overlooks the temple, before driving back to Bangkok.

The price includes the admissions to Erawan National Park, Mallika R.E. 124 and the Skywalk, the bamboo raft, the Death Railway ticket, the vehicle and driver, tolls, fuel and the operator's insurance. Hotel accommodation, meals and drinks, tips and personal expenses appear in the list after the inclusions, so treat them as extra, and book your own hotel in Kanchanaburi or ask the operator. The listing names a driver, not a guide. If you want the history explained, read about the railway beforehand or visit one of the war museums in town on your own.

What most itineraries leave out is how to use the waterfall. Erawan is one of the most visited parks in Thailand, and weekends and holidays are crowded, so a weekday visit or an early start gives more space on the paths. The lower tiers are the easiest to reach and the best for swimming, and small fish nibble at your feet in some pools, which is a sensation visitors either love or avoid. The upper tiers need more climbing on rocky steps, so wear shoes with grip. The falls run strongest in and just after the rainy season, from about June to October, and are thinner in the dry months from February to May.

The seasons shape the day. From November to February the weather is cooler and drier, which is the most comfortable time for the raft and the walk. March to May is hot, and the rainy season brings daily downpours that can close trails. Bring swimwear, a towel and a change of clothes, since you will want to swim.

The common mistakes are about timing. Visitors leave Bangkok late, so the afternoon is rushed, or they try to fit the park, the railway and the bridge into one long day. The overnight stay solves that. They also forget cash for small purchases, or arrive at the waterfall without a towel. A wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen help throughout.

Kanchanaburi has more to see than the tour covers. The Kanchanaburi War Cemetery holds the graves of Allied prisoners who died building the railway, and the JEATH War Museum and the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre explain the history in detail. Hellfire Pass, a cutting made by hand, lies further north and is a longer trip. In the evening the riverside is quiet, with floating restaurants and guesthouses, and mosquito repellent is useful. At Erawan, the park may ask for a deposit on plastic bags and bottles to reduce litter, which is refunded when you bring them back, so bring a reusable bottle. Arrive early at the lower falls on weekends, when Thai families also come for the day.

Sort out the overnight stay early. Because accommodation appears not to be included, decide in advance whether you prefer a riverside guesthouse, a floating hotel or a hotel near the town centre, and tell the driver where you are staying so that the morning pickup works. Booking ahead is wise at weekends and holidays, when Thai visitors fill the rooms around Erawan and the river.

The operator is SST Global Tour. The tour suits travellers who want to see Kanchanaburi without the stress of the drive, and who prefer an overnight stay to a rushed day trip. For a wildlife alternative from Bangkok, see the Khao Yai trek on this site.
