What it is

Amangalla occupies a complex inside Galle Fort that was built in 1684 as the headquarters of the Dutch commanders and their staff. Wikipedia gives 1715 as the date it was completed. Under British rule, the complex housed soldiers.

In 1865 it became the New Oriental Hotel, a name it kept for about 140 years. In 2005 it became a heritage hotel in the Aman group and took the name Amangalla.

Inside the fort

The hotel is at 10 Church Street, within the walls of Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our itinerary spends three nights in Galle Fort, with a walk around the Dutch ramparts at the end of the first day.

That is the difference from a resort outside the walls: you are in the old town, in a building that has been a hotel since 1865.

Size and dining

Wikipedia reports 33 rooms and suites as of 2009, so the hotel is small, and the current number is worth asking about. The page does not name restaurants. It says the dining hall, furnished in period style, serves all meals, including Sri Lankan dishes, on antique silverware.

Rooms and the rate

One comparison site listed a standard room from £880 a night for a stay in late March 2026, with other room types between £636 and £923. Our Sri Lanka itinerary prices its three Galle Fort nights at Fort Bazaar, a cheaper hotel in the fort, so choosing Amangalla would raise the itinerary total.

Who it suits

It suits travelers who want a historic hotel in the middle of Galle Fort and are prepared to pay a high price for a small, quiet one. Two or three nights let you walk the walls at dawn and dusk and then rest.

It is a poor fit for a tight budget, for those who want a pool and a beach on the doorstep, or for anyone who wants a large hotel with many facilities. For those, a resort on the coast is a better match.

Ask the hotel
  • How many rooms and suites are there today, and what are the categories?
  • Is there a pool, and is it open to all guests?
  • Which months are the quietest in the fort, and does the hotel discount them?
  • Can the hotel arrange a guided walk of the ramparts?
  • What are the current rates for our dates, with taxes and service charge?
