What it is

Amantaka stands on what Aman calls a historic garden estate at the foot of Mount Phousi, in the UNESCO World Heritage town of Luang Prabang. It has 24 suites with high wooden ceilings, four-poster beds and private verandas or courtyards. Wikipedia dates it to 2009 and credits Jean-Michel Gathy of Denniston.

Aman's page gives no construction dates or history for the buildings, so we say nothing more on that.

Where it sits

The hotel is on Kingkitsarath Road, a short walk from the Mekong, and the airport is a ten-minute drive. Our Laos itinerary describes it as inside the UNESCO-listed old town and spends five nights in Luang Prabang.

Aman lists experiences such as a dinner on a Mekong sunset cruise and a dinner in a rice paddy. Treat those as the hotel's offers, and ask which are included.

Rooms and the rate

Mr & Mrs Smith shows a starting rate of US$1,560 a night for the cheapest double in the next 60 days, taxes and fees included, quoted in US dollars by the hotel. HotelsCombined and Kayak show other figures for other dates.

Who it suits

It suits travelers who want a quiet colonial-style hotel within walking distance of the old town and the river, for a few nights in Luang Prabang.

It is a poor fit for a modest budget, and for anyone who wants a large resort with many facilities: with 24 suites it is small.

Ask the hotel
  • Which suites have a veranda, and which a courtyard?
  • Which of the listed experiences, such as the Mekong sunset cruise, are included in the rate?
  • How far is the walk to the night market and the old town?
  • Is the spa open to non-guests?
  • What are the current rates for our dates, with taxes and service charge?
