What it is

The hotel stands on the site of a shipyard. Wikipedia says the yard was established in 1895 by Geo Brunton & Sons, and its History section calls the firm George Brunton & Sons and dates the founding to around 1895. It describes the yard as one of the important British shipbuilding facilities in Kochi and says it peaked in the mid-twentieth century. Ships it built were reportedly used by the British in the Second World War.

The yard stopped working in the twentieth century; the page gives no year. The property then stood abandoned for several decades.

From boatyard to hotel

In 1992 CGH Earth leased the property from the Cochin Port Trust and redeveloped it. The hotel opened in August 1999. One detail on the page is a boat: the Manta, the last boat the Bruntons built, was bought by the hotel at auction and was docked near the pool.

The page does not give a number of rooms, so we do not either. Ask the hotel for the current count and the room categories.

Where it sits

The hotel is in Fort Kochi, on the edge of the port. Our India itinerary describes it as on the Fort Kochi waterfront, facing the harbor mouth, and spends two nights there.

Rooms and the rate

The rate in our itinerary is INR 16,416 a night, from Mr & Mrs Smith. We did not convert it by hand; the itinerary total does that from the day's exchange rate. It is a published figure for no stated room category, so check which room it covers.

Who it suits

It suits travelers who like a hotel with a story behind it and want two nights in Fort Kochi.

It is a poor fit for anyone who needs the facts we could not source: the room count and the facilities are not on the page we read.

Ask the hotel
  • How many rooms does the hotel have, and which face the harbor?
  • Is the Manta still on display near the pool?
  • Which room category does the quoted rate cover?
  • Does the hotel arrange transfers to the backwaters?
  • What are the current rates for our dates, with taxes and service charge?
