What it is

The Peninsula Bangkok opened in November 1998 on Charoen Nakhon Road, in the Khlong San district on the western, Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya River. Wikipedia describes it as a five-star hotel of 37 floors and 367 rooms, with five restaurants.

The company that runs it, The Peninsula Hotels, belongs to Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels. Until 2020 the Bangkok hotel was split between that group and the Phataraprasit family, and the group bought the family's half that year. The page does not name an architect, so we do not either.

Which side of the river

The hotel stands on the Thonburi bank, opposite the main part of the city. Our Thailand family itinerary describes it as a hotel where every room faces the river and where shuttle boats cross to the city side. We have not confirmed that from the hotel's own pages, so treat it as the itinerary's description and ask the hotel.

The practical question is the crossing, so ask about the boat's hours and what happens late in the evening.

Rooms and the rate

Wikipedia lists 367 rooms and 67 suites and does not say whether the suites are part of the 367, so we do not give a single total. For a family, the useful questions are about connecting rooms and larger suites.

The rate in our itinerary is US$380 a night. It comes from a comparison article on the Peninsula and the Mandarin Oriental, and it was the lowest of the three Bangkok hotels we looked at. It is a single published figure for no stated date, not a quote.

Who it suits

It suits travelers who want a tall, modern riverside hotel with several restaurants, particularly families who want space. Two nights fit the route in our itinerary.

It is a poor fit for anyone who wants to walk out into the old city: the hotel is on the far bank, and getting across is part of the plan.

Ask the hotel
  • Do all rooms face the river, as our itinerary describes, and which do not?
  • What are the hours of the boat across the river, and is it free for guests?
  • Can the hotel offer connecting rooms or a family suite, and at what price?
  • How many rooms and suites are there today?
  • What are the current rates for our dates, with taxes and service charge?
