Private Seoul Royal Palaces and City Wall Tour
Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon, Changdeokgung's Secret Garden and the Seoul City Wall in a private limousine

What makes this different
Seoul's royal palaces are spread across the old city, and their opening days differ, which is why a plan helps. This private tour covers the main ones in a single day with a driver-guide, in a Kia Carnival limousine with seats for up to six guests. The listing states that the tour is private and designed for your own party, whether you travel alone, as a couple, with family or in a group. The operator is Seoulmate Tours, and GetYourGuide showed US$190 per person in October 2026.
The itinerary starts with Gyeongbokgung Palace, which the listing calls the grandest of Seoul's royal palaces. It was the main palace of the Joseon dynasty, which ruled Korea from the end of the fourteenth century, and it was rebuilt in the nineteenth century after being burned during the Japanese invasions. The tour then walks the streets and hanok houses of Bukchon Hanok Village, a residential neighbourhood of traditional houses, where visitors are asked to keep their voices down. It continues to Changdeokgung Palace and its Secret Garden, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and to Changgyeonggung, which is connected to Changdeokgung and was mainly a residence for the royal family. Deoksugung Palace, where traditional buildings stand next to Western-style ones, is also named, and the tour ends at a scenic section of the Seoul City Wall. The tour lasts about seven hours and the itinerary can be customised.
What most itineraries do not explain is why the palaces are different from one another. Gyeongbokgung is the formal palace, with a processional layout that suits ceremonies. Changdeokgung, by contrast, was built to follow the contours of the land, and the Secret Garden behind it is a royal retreat of pavilions, ponds and old trees. Deoksugung shows the late nineteenth century, when Korea opened to the West. A guide who connects these changes turns three similar-looking compounds into a story of a dynasty.
The price includes the palace tickets, the Secret Garden ticket, the hotel pickup and drop-off, the English-speaking driver-guide, fuel, tolls and parking, and a coffee. Meals and personal expenses are not included. Alcoholic drinks are not allowed in the vehicle.
Check the opening days. Gyeongbokgung is closed on Tuesdays; if your tour falls on a Tuesday, the listing says it visits Changdeokgung and the Secret Garden instead, subject to availability. Changdeokgung and the Secret Garden are closed on Mondays, in which case you see Gyeongbokgung and then COEX Mall or another suitable attraction. If both palace visits are affected by a temporary closure, N Seoul Tower and other attractions may be arranged. If a core palace cannot be visited, the operator offers a full refund of the entire affected booking, not only of the palace portion.
The common mistakes are timing and clothing. Visitors arrive at midday in summer, when the courtyards have no shade, or in winter without a coat, since the stone squares are exposed. They also assume that all palaces open every day. Comfortable shoes matter, because the palaces involve long walks on gravel. A royal guard-changing ceremony is staged at Gyeongbokgung's main gate on most days, and it is worth timing a stop around it; ask your guide whether it falls inside your day.
The seasons shape the experience. Spring brings cherry blossom and autumn turns the maples around the palaces red and gold, which is when the Secret Garden is most photographed. Summer is hot and humid, and winter can be very cold but is quieter.
A few extras make the day richer. Visitors who wear a hanbok, the traditional Korean dress, are admitted free to the main palaces, and rental shops near Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung make it easy to try it, although it is an extra on top of this tour. Changdeokgung's Secret Garden is usually visited at set times, so the palace and garden form the fixed point of the day, and the rest is arranged around it. Insadong, a short distance away, has tea houses where you can sit down after the walking, and the Seoul City Wall climbs the hills on the edge of the old city with views back over the palaces. Because the vehicle waits for you, it is easy to add a short stop for lunch at a traditional restaurant, and the driver-guide can recommend one close to the next palace.
Choose your day with care. The monsoon rains, roughly in July, bring heavy downpours, and the palace courtyards have little cover, so bring an umbrella. Weekends are busier than weekdays at Gyeongbokgung and Bukchon, so if your dates are flexible, a weekday gives the calmest walk. Winter snow makes the palaces especially photogenic, but the cold is real and gloves help.
The tour suits travellers who want the palace circuit organised by someone who knows the closing days, and who prefer a vehicle between the stops to the subway.
