About this experience

What makes this different

Northern Taiwan packs several very different places into a single drive from Taipei: a volcanic national park, a hillside town built on gold mining, a village where a railway runs through the main street, and a coast of strangely eroded rock. This is a private day that links them, in a private air-conditioned vehicle with an English-speaking driver-guide. GetYourGuide showed US$227 per person in October 2026, and the day lasts about eleven hours.

The day starts at your accommodation. The first stop is Yangmingshan National Park, where Xiaoyoukeng has steaming fumaroles and sulphur vents. You continue to Qingtiangang Grassland, an open stretch of meadow where water buffalo may be grazing, and stop at Lengshuikeng, a forested valley with a pale mineral pond. At Yehliu Geopark you follow coastal paths past rock formations shaped by wind and waves, including the famous Queen's Head.

Jiufen Old Street is next, a former gold-mining town overlooking the sea, with narrow lanes, traditional shops and food stalls to explore at your own pace. The last stops are Shifen Old Street, where shops line an active railway, and Shifen Waterfall. At Shifen you can buy a sky lantern, write your wishes on it and release it above the valley; the lantern is optional and paid for separately.

The variety has a common cause. Yangmingshan sits on the Tatun volcanic group, an area of old volcanoes that still releases steam and sulphur, which is why the air near the vents smells of eggs and the ground is stained yellow. The rock formations at Yehliu are sandstone that wind and sea have shaped into mushrooms, candles and the famous Queen's Head, whose neck is slender and is slowly wearing away, so it is worth seeing now. Jiufen grew during the gold rush at the end of the nineteenth century and fell quiet when the mines closed, and its hillside lanes of teahouses and lanterns now draw crowds because of that faded charm.

The price includes hotel pickup and drop-off, the private vehicle, the driver-guide, all entrance fees and bottled water. The pickup details are confirmed one day before the tour. The route includes paths, uneven ground and stairs, so wear comfortable walking shoes, and bring a light jacket and rain protection, because mountain weather changes quickly.

What most itineraries do not say is how weather shapes the day. Jiufen and the north-east coast receive a lot of rain, especially in the cooler months from October to March, when the north-east monsoon brings drizzle and mist. A foggy Jiufen can be atmospheric but hides the sea view. Yangmingshan blooms in spring, with cherry blossoms in February and March and calla lilies in the following weeks, while autumn brings silver grass on the hills. Summer is hot and humid, and typhoons can disrupt travel between July and October. Your driver-guide can change the order of the stops if one area is clouded in.

Crowds are another factor. Jiufen and Shifen are busiest on weekends and holidays, and the narrow lanes can be congested at midday and early evening. A weekday gives more space, and a guide who arrives at Jiufen at the right moment, avoiding the coach groups, makes a big difference. Try local snacks such as taro balls and peanut ice cream rolls in Jiufen, and bring cash for stalls.

The sky lantern is a small ritual with a custom. Colours are said to carry different wishes, such as health or success, and you write your message on the paper before the lantern is lit and released. Please follow the staff's instructions and the local rules about where lanterns may be released.

Eat as you go. Jiufen is known for taro balls, fish balls and peanut ice cream rolls, and Shifen has snacks cooked in front of you, so keep your appetite for the lanes and ask your guide where to find the best stalls. Carry some cash, since many small shops do not take cards. If the weather turns wet, Jiufen's teahouses are good places to wait out the rain, and a hot pot of tea with a view of the hillside is a gentle way to take a break between the longer stops.

Dress in layers, since Yangmingshan can be cool and windy while the coast is humid. Leave a little room in the day for the unexpected: a stop at a tea house, a photograph at a viewpoint or a longer look at the rocks at Yehliu. The guide can adjust the order if a place is crowded or clouded in.

The tour is run by Roamhertravel, and the listing marks the day as likely to sell out. It suits travellers who want to see the north of Taiwan in one day without arranging trains and buses between stops, and who like having a guide to decide where to linger. If you prefer one landscape in depth, the Taroko Gorge private day on this site covers a single national park on the east coast.
