About this experience

What makes this different

This four-day programme is about the trades and traditions of the old city as well as the river. It is run by Local Narratives, and each day is built around a hands-on session with a craftsperson, a teacher or a boatman rather than a sightseeing route. GetYourGuide showed US$274 per person in October 2026.

Varanasi, also called Benares or Kashi, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and it is sacred to Hindus, who come to bathe in the Ganga and to perform the rites of death. The old city is a maze of lanes, shrines and workshops, and the tradition of crafts there is as old as the pilgrimage. Banarasi silk, with its gold and silver thread, is famous across India, and the city's wooden toys and lacquerware have been made by families for generations.

Day 1 is arrival and an evening heritage walk with students from Banaras Hindu University through Assi Ghat, hidden temples, Lolark Kund and Tulsi Dham, followed by the evening Ganga Aarti at Assi Ghat. The Aarti at Assi is quieter than the more famous one at Dashashwamedh Ghat and gives a calmer view of the ritual, with lamps, chanting and music. On Day 2 you take part in a wooden toy-making session with artisans in Khojwan, learning carving, lac work, painting and finishing, and take your toy home. In the afternoon you visit Banarasi saree weavers in Madanpura to see the looms and meet the artisans, with a chance to shop if you like. Day 3 starts in a historic akhada, where you watch pehlwans train and try basic wrestling techniques, and ends with a late-evening Shakti and feminine energy walk through the Devi Mandir, the Karvat Mandir and Manikarnika Ghat, concluding with the Sandhya Aarti at Kashi Vishwanath Temple. On Day 4 you join local boat builders at the ghats to learn how wooden boats are built, then take a boat ride on the Ganga with a local boatman.

The listing is clear about the activities but not about the practical package. Its list of inclusions names the sessions above, and it ends with meals, accommodation and transportation to and from Varanasi, which read as extras. The listing does not state a group size. Ask the operator before you book what is covered, how you reach each session and whether the activities run for a private group.

What most itineraries do not prepare you for is the manner of the city. Manikarnika Ghat is a cremation ghat, and photography there is not allowed, so put your camera away, keep your voice low and follow your guide's instructions. Dress modestly with covered shoulders and knees, and be ready to remove your shoes at temples. The Kashi Vishwanath Temple has strict security, and phones, bags and cameras are usually not allowed inside, so carry only what you need.

The season matters. The cool months from October to March are the most pleasant, with mild days and cold, foggy mornings in December and January. From April to June the heat can be fierce, often above 40 degrees, and the monsoon from July to September raises the river and floods the lower steps of the ghats, which can disrupt boat rides and make the lanes slippery. Plan the walks in the early morning or evening when the light is soft and the air is cooler.

There is a lot of walking, so wear comfortable shoes and bring a hat, sunscreen, water and snacks. The activities are not suitable for people with mobility impairments. Alcohol, drugs and nudity are not allowed.

Food keeps you going through the walking. Breakfast in Varanasi is often kachori with spiced potato curry, followed by sweet jalebi, and the city is known for its lassi, tamatar chaat and paan, a betel leaf preparation. In winter, malaiyo, a light milk foam dessert, appears on the streets. Drink bottled or filtered water, choose busy stalls where food is cooked in front of you, and carry hand sanitiser. The lanes are narrow and shared with cows, motorbikes and pilgrims, so watch your step. The Ganga Aarti begins around sunset, and a boat ride at sunrise is often the most peaceful hour on the river, so ask your boatman about timing. Carry cash and be firm but polite with touts.

Pace yourself. Four days of early starts, late evenings and long walks is demanding in the heat, so leave a few hours each afternoon for rest, tea and a shower. If you are new to India, the first day can feel overwhelming, and the heritage walk with students is a gentle way to begin. Keep valuables close, carry a small bag and wear shoes that are easy to take off at temple doors.

The programme suits travellers with several days in Varanasi who want to learn from the people who work in the city, and who are comfortable organising their own accommodation and transport.
