What it is

Mandarin Oriental, Taipei is a newer hotel than most of those on this site: it opened in May 2014 with 303 rooms and suites. Wikipedia describes its design as a blend of classic European and Asian styles, and its lobby has a crystal chandelier of some 50,000 pieces. It is a large, polished city hotel rather than a heritage building.

That is not a criticism. In a city like Taipei, the case for a hotel like this is reliability: a large room, a good spa, several restaurants and a staff used to international guests.

Where it sits

The hotel is on Dunhua North Road in the Songshan district, close to Taipei Songshan Airport, the Breeze Center and Taipei Arena. It is not in the old, walkable part of the city. For a stay built around the National Palace Museum, Longshan Temple and the night markets, expect to take taxis or the metro, and a private car for the day trips.

The airport is the practical advantage. Songshan handles domestic and some regional flights, which can help on a short trip with a flight at either end.

Eating and drinking

Wikipedia lists six restaurants plus a bar and a private lounge, and describes the lead as six restaurants and bars, so the page is not consistent on the exact split. Ask the hotel for the current line-up and opening hours, particularly if you plan a dinner on your first evening after a long flight.

Rooms and the rate

The rate we use in our Taiwan itinerary is US$318 a night, an average from HotelsCombined; other sites show cheaper starting rates and more expensive typical ones. Because the figure is an average, the room you are quoted may be better or worse than the one it describes, and the difference between categories is larger than between most dates.

Who it suits

It suits travellers who want a comfortable, central-feeling base for three or four nights in Taipei, before or after the east coast, and who value a spa and a pool after a day of sightseeing. It suits the start and end of a Taiwan trip especially well, because of the airport.

It is a weaker match for travellers looking for local character in the building itself, or a base in the old streets. For that, a smaller hotel in a different district is the better choice.

  • Which room categories are available, and what does each one add?
  • Which restaurants are open in the month we travel, and which need booking?
  • Is the pool open in the month we travel, and are there towels and shade?
  • Can the hotel arrange a driver for the journey to Taroko Gorge?
  • What are the current rates for our dates, with taxes and service charge?
