Where to go in Asia in April

April is the best month for the temperate north: cherry blossom in Japan and Korea, spring colour in China, rhododendrons in Nepal and Bhutan, and the start of the dry season in Indonesia. Taiwan and northern Vietnam are warm and settled. These are the places and the weeks that many travellers plan a whole year around, and the crowds follow.

In the tropics the month is hot. Southeast Asia is at the peak of its heat, India's plains are close to unbearable, and several countries celebrate their new year with water festivals in the middle of the month. These are joyful and loud, and they close shops and fill transport. Beaches and islands remain a fine choice, but the cities and temples are best seen at dawn.

At a glance

Best time

Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, China, Vietnam, The Philippines, Nepal and Bhutan

Good

Bali and Indonesia, Sri Lanka

Hard going

India, Mongolia

Region by region

Japan

Kyoto, Tokyo, Hokkaido

Best time

The classic month. Cherry blossom usually peaks in the first days of April in Kyoto and Tokyo and a few weeks later in the north. It is also the most crowded and expensive. Golden Week starts at the end of the month, so avoid the last days.

Temples, Tea & Tokyo, 8 days

South Korea

Seoul, Gyeongju, Jeju

Best time

Cherry blossom in the first half, starting in the south and reaching Seoul in the first days of April. Jeju's rapeseed fields turn yellow. Mild days, cool nights and good walking weather, but the blossom weeks are busy.

Seoul, Gyeongju & Jeju, 7 days

Taiwan

Taipei, Taroko, Tainan

Best time

Warm and green, with a lot of the island in flower. Good for Taroko Gorge, Sun Moon Lake and the cities. The plum rains have not yet started. Clear days are common, and the heat is still bearable.

Taiwan: Taipei and Taroko Gorge, 7 days

China

Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai

Best time

Spring arrives, with warm days, blossom in the cities and clear skies on most days. The Great Wall is green at its edges. A comfortable month for walking Beijing and Xi'an, though Qingming and the May holiday bring local crowds.

China's Three Great Cities, 9 days

Vietnam

Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, Saigon

Best time

Warm and settled in the north and centre, with clear skies over Ha Long Bay and the Hoi An beaches opening. The south is very hot. Reunification Day and Labour Day, around the start of May, fill hotels.

Northern Vietnam in Five Days, 5 days

The Philippines

Manila, El Nido, Cebu, Bohol

Best time

Hot, dry and bright. Beaches are at their best. Holy Week is a major holiday and many Filipinos travel, so book far ahead for the days around it. Manila empties out in Holy Week, and some shops close.

El Nido, by Island Resort, 7 days

Sri Lanka

Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella, Galle

Good

Hot and humid, with the first inter-monsoon showers. Sinhalese and Tamil new year in mid-April closes shops and fills trains. The hill country has its own April season, with gardens and horse racing at Nuwara Eliya.

Cambodia and Laos

Angkor, Luang Prabang

Mixed

The hottest month, often well above 35 degrees, and the haze in Laos is at its worst. Khmer new year in mid-month and Lao new year, Pi Mai, bring water fights and closed shops. Angkor is quiet but punishing in the afternoon.

Thailand

Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Samui

Mixed

The hottest month, and Songkran, the Thai new year, fills the middle of it with water fights across the country. It is fun, and also loud, wet and crowded, with some shops closed. Beaches are fine, and the north is smoky and hot.

Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Borneo

Mixed

Hot and humid. The east coast islands, such as the Perhentians and Tioman, are open and the sea is calm. Borneo is drier, and diving at Sipadan opens up. The west coast sees more afternoon storms.

India

Rajasthan, Kerala, Delhi

Hard going

Hot in most of the country. Rajasthan and Delhi often pass 40 degrees. Kerala is humid. Sightseeing needs to be at dawn and late afternoon. The hill stations offer relief. Few Western visitors, and low prices.

Mongolia

Ulaanbaatar, the Gobi, the steppe

Hard going

Cold nights, windy days and dust storms in the Gobi. Most camps are still closed or just opening. The landscape is brown before the green begins. Not a month to choose without good reason.

Building the trip

April has more good choices than any other month, which is the problem: every one of them is booked early. Japan and Bhutan need four to six months of notice, and the blossom weeks in Kyoto go first. If you want Japan, aim for the first ten days of the month and avoid the end of April, when Golden Week begins. Indonesia's dry season opens, so Bali and Komodo are a quieter alternative to the northern peak. In Southeast Asia and India, plan the cities for the early morning and the beach for the afternoon, and expect closures during the new-year water festivals in the middle of the month. Eight to ten days is a good length for one country.

Dates to plan around

Songkran in Thailand, Pi Mai in Laos and Khmer new year in Cambodia fall in the middle of the month. Sri Lanka's new year is in mid-April. Golden Week in Japan starts at the end of the month and fills trains and rooms for about a week.

These are typical seasonal patterns, not forecasts. Rain, heat and the dates of blossoms and festivals move from year to year, so check a current forecast and your government's travel advice before you book.
