Where to go in Asia in March

March is a month of transitions. The dry season is ending in Southeast Asia, and the heat is building, but skies are still clear and seas calm. In Japan, the first cherry blossoms appear in the last days of the month. Spring starts in the Himalaya, with rhododendrons and the first festivals in Bhutan, and in Taiwan and Vietnam the weather is mild and settled.

It is also a good time to combine regions, because the weather in several of them is at or near its best at once. The risk is in the details. Blossom dates move, the heat in India's plains is already strong by the end of the month, and Holi and Nyepi can disrupt travel for a day or two. A flexible plan beats a precise one.

At a glance

Best time

Vietnam, The Philippines, Sri Lanka, India, Nepal and Bhutan

Good

Japan, Taiwan, Cambodia and Laos, Thailand, Malaysia

Hard going

Mongolia

Region by region

The Philippines

Manila, El Nido, Cebu, Bohol

Best time

Dry and getting hotter. Clear water and calm seas make this one of the best months for island hopping and diving. Palawan and Boracay are busy. By the end of the month, the heat in Manila is strong.

El Nido, by Island Resort, 7 days

Sri Lanka

Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella, Galle

Best time

Hot but dry, and a good month for Galle, Yala and the cultural sites. Leopard sightings at Yala are among the best of the year as water becomes scarce. Colombo and the coast are humid, and the hills are comfortable.

Sri Lanka: Coast & Culture, 14 days

India

Rajasthan, Kerala, Delhi

Best time

Warming up. Holi, the festival of colours, falls in March and is joyful and messy. Rajasthan is hot by the end of the month, and Kerala is humid. A good month at the start, a hot one by the end.

Palaces of Rajasthan, Waters of Kerala, 10 days

Japan

Kyoto, Tokyo, Hokkaido

Good

Still cool and changeable, then the cherry trees begin to open in Tokyo and Kyoto in the last week or so. The date moves by a week either way each year, so a trip built around a precise day can miss. Plum and early blossom fill the gap.

Temples, Tea & Tokyo, 8 days

Taiwan

Taipei, Taroko, Tainan

Good

Warming up, with a mix of sun and showers. Cherry blossoms bloom at Alishan and in the north. A comfortable month for Taipei, Tainan and the east coast. Humidity rises toward the end of the month.

Taiwan: Taipei and Taroko Gorge, 7 days

Cambodia and Laos

Angkor, Luang Prabang

Good

Getting hot, and in northern Laos the burning of fields starts to put smoke and haze in the air. Angkor is still workable if you visit at sunrise and late in the day and rest in the middle. Fewer visitors than in winter.

Thailand

Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Samui

Good

Getting hotter. Island beaches are still excellent, and the sea is calm. Chiang Mai's air quality is at its worst, with smoke from burning fields, so the north is the place to skip. Bangkok is hot but dry.

Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Borneo

Good

Still dry on the west coast, with heat building. The east coast islands start to reopen toward the end of the month. Borneo's rain eases. A solid month for Penang and for most of the peninsula.

Malaysia: Kuala Lumpur and Penang, 8 days

South Korea

Seoul, Gyeongju, Jeju

Mixed

A slow thaw. Early March is cold, and yellow dust from China can haze the air. Jeju begins to flower. By the end of the month the first cherry blossoms appear in the south, and the mood in Seoul turns hopeful.

China

Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai

Mixed

Winter loosens its grip slowly. Beijing is dry and windy, with the odd dust haze. Shanghai is grey and damp but starts to warm. A quiet time at the big sights, if you can live with cool weather.

Bali and Indonesia

Bali, Komodo, Lombok

Mixed

Rain eases toward the end of the month. Nyepi, the Day of Silence, falls in March or April: the whole island stops for a day, the airport closes and tourists stay indoors. Check the date before you book.

Mongolia

Ulaanbaatar, the Gobi, the steppe

Hard going

Still winter, with the first signs of thaw late in the month. Camps remain closed. The Gobi can be windy and dusty. Roads on the steppe are muddy as the snow melts.

Building the trip

March is a good month for a longer, two-region route because the weather turns in both. A common plan is northern Vietnam and Cambodia, or Taiwan followed by Japan in the last week for the first blossoms. Treat Japanese blossom dates as a window, not a promise: stay at least a week and keep the days after the forecast flexible. Bhutan opens its spring season, so flights and guides need booking early. Book the Himalaya four to six months ahead and the rest two to three. By the end of the month India's plains are hot, so choose Kerala or the hills over Rajasthan for a late-March start.

Dates to plan around

Holi is celebrated in India in March. Nyepi, Bali's Day of Silence, closes the airport for a day and falls in March or April. Cherry blossom forecasts for Japan are published from the beginning of the month and shift by a week or more each year.

These are typical seasonal patterns, not forecasts. Rain, heat and the dates of blossoms and festivals move from year to year, so check a current forecast and your government's travel advice before you book.
