Where to go in Asia in May

May is a quiet success for the north and the east. Japan, Korea and China are mild and green once the early-May holidays are over. Bhutan is in its spring season. Indonesia is dry and calm, with the best sea for Komodo, and Mongolia's camps open late in the month. The Philippines is hot and dry, with the beach season in full swing until the rains.

For the rest of the region it is a month of heat and approaching rain. India and Nepal's lowlands are very hot before the monsoon, Thailand and Cambodia see the first storms, and Sri Lanka's south-west monsoon begins. Prices start to drop in the places that are entering their wet season, which is a reason to go if you can accept some rain.

At a glance

Best time

Japan, South Korea, China, Bali and Indonesia

Good

The Philippines, Nepal and Bhutan

Hard going

India

Region by region

Japan

Kyoto, Tokyo, Hokkaido

Best time

Mild, green and mostly dry once Golden Week ends, around the 6th. Wisteria, azaleas and fresh maple leaves replace the blossom. Hokkaido is just coming into bloom. A quieter, cheaper time to visit than April, with long days for walking.

South Korea

Seoul, Gyeongju, Jeju

Best time

Warm, green and mostly clear before the rains. Lotus lanterns decorate temples for Buddha's birthday. Hiking in the national parks is at its best. A calmer alternative to April, with fewer visitors at the palaces.

Seoul, Gyeongju & Jeju, 7 days

China

Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai

Best time

Warm and mostly dry, with long days. The Labour Day holiday in the first days of the month sends crowds to the sights, so aim for the second half. Good for Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai, and a pleasant month for the Great Wall.

China's Three Great Cities, 9 days

The Philippines

Manila, El Nido, Cebu, Bohol

Good

Very hot and humid, with the first storms arriving late in the month. The sea is still calm in Palawan and the water is clear. A good month for the beach, and for early starts in the cities.

El Nido, by Island Resort, 7 days

Nepal and Bhutan

Kathmandu, Pokhara, Paro, Thimphu

Good

Warm and getting hazy, with the pre-monsoon storms beginning late in the month. Rhododendrons linger at altitude. Bhutan is still pleasant, and the high trails are free of snow. Mountain views are less clear than in autumn.

Bhutan: Dzongs, Valleys & Tiger's Nest, 8 days

Taiwan

Taipei, Taroko, Tainan

Mixed

The plum rains begin, bringing long spells of drizzle and humidity. Landslides can close mountain roads. Taipei is still fine with indoor stops, but the east coast and mountains are less reliable than in spring.

Vietnam

Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, Saigon

Mixed

Hot and humid from the north to the south. The rainy season begins in the south and the centre stays dry. Hanoi is steamy. Good for Hoi An and the central coast, less so for the north and the Mekong Delta.

Cambodia and Laos

Angkor, Luang Prabang

Mixed

Hot and humid, with the first rains arriving and clearing the haze. The landscape turns green. Storms come in the afternoon and evening. Angkor is quiet, and prices fall, but the heat is still heavy.

Thailand

Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Samui

Mixed

The rains begin, with afternoon storms and humid heat. The Gulf islands, including Samui, stay drier than the Andaman coast. Prices fall. A workable month for the Gulf and for cities, less so for the Andaman beaches.

Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Borneo

Mixed

Hot with regular afternoon storms in Kuala Lumpur. The east coast and Borneo are in good shape, with calm seas and bright days. A good month for the islands and the rainforests of Sabah and Sarawak.

Sri Lanka

Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella, Galle

Mixed

The south-west monsoon arrives on the west and south coasts, with heavy rain and rough seas. The east coast around Trincomalee and Arugam Bay turns sunny and calm. The hill country is wet, but Sigiriya and the east stay workable.

Mongolia

Ulaanbaatar, the Gobi, the steppe

Mixed

Spring arrives slowly, with warmer days and cold nights. Some camps open late in the month. The Gobi can still be dusty and windy, and the steppe begins to turn green. Quiet, with low prices.

India

Rajasthan, Kerala, Delhi

Hard going

The hottest, most punishing weather in the plains, with temperatures that can top 45 degrees in Rajasthan and Delhi. Hill stations and the Himalaya are the places to be. Kerala's pre-monsoon storms begin late in the month.

Building the trip

May rewards travellers who can be flexible. Japan after the early-May holidays is calm and green, Bhutan is still in its spring season, and Indonesia is dry with calm seas. It is also the month in which several countries change season, so a plan that combines two regions should have a dry-weather fallback. Prices are lower than in April, and the rooms that were full a month earlier are available again. Mongolia opens in the last weeks of the month, but flights and camps are not at full capacity until June. If you go to India or the Nepalese lowlands, keep to the hills: the plains are very hot.

Dates to plan around

Labour Day holidays in China, and Golden Week's end in Japan, make the first week of May crowded. Vesak, Buddha's birthday, is celebrated across Southeast Asia and Sri Lanka in May, in some years in early June.

These are typical seasonal patterns, not forecasts. Rain, heat and the dates of blossoms and festivals move from year to year, so check a current forecast and your government's travel advice before you book.
