About this experience

What makes this different

Niseko, in the southwest of Hokkaido, receives an average of around fifteen metres of snow each year, among the highest totals of any major ski resort in the world. Cold air from Siberia picks up moisture as it crosses the Sea of Japan and falls as light, dry powder on the volcanic slopes of Mount Niseko Annupuri. Grand Hirafu, the largest of the resort areas, faces Mount Yotei, a near-perfect volcanic cone often called the Fuji of Hokkaido.

This full-day experience pairs you with a licensed ski guide to explore the best powder of the day, both on the resort and through Niseko's backcountry gates. Under the Niseko Rules, skiing outside the resort boundaries is permitted only through designated gates, which are opened or closed depending on avalanche conditions. Your guide checks the daily avalanche information, chooses routes to suit the conditions and your ability, and leads you through the gates to open bowls and tree runs.

The day begins at the base of the main gondola at 8:30 AM, with an avalanche safety briefing, including how to use a transceiver, probe and shovel. On powder days, the morning is spent chasing fresh snow on the upper slopes and through the trees, where the snow stays soft long after the groomed runs are tracked out. In the afternoon, your guide may take you to quieter areas of the resort, depending on the weather and the snow.

The season usually runs from early December to early May, with the most reliable powder in January and February, when storms arrive almost daily. Visibility can be poor during storms, and the upper lifts may close in high winds. March brings sunnier days and softer snow.

Night skiing is available on part of the mountain into the evening during the main season, with the slopes lit under Mount Yotei's silhouette.

This experience is suitable for confident intermediate and advanced skiers or snowboarders who can ride comfortably in variable terrain. Backcountry skiing carries inherent risks, and your guide makes all decisions about routes and safety.

After skiing, the day ends with a bowl of ramen at a noodle shop in Hirafu village, a Hokkaido tradition. Niseko also has many onsen, hot spring baths, where you can soak tired muscles after a day on the slopes.

A licensed ski guide, a full-day lift pass, an avalanche safety briefing and après-ski ramen are included. Ski or snowboard hire and accommodation are not.
