What it is

Aman Kyoto is set in a secluded forest garden in the Takagamine district, at the foothills of Hidari Daimonji. Aman describes it as its second Japanese sanctuary and says it is close to the Kinkaku-ji temple and 16 other UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Wikipedia dates it to 2019 and credits Kerry Hill with the design.

The accommodation is a set of suites and pavilions in the glades. Aman says the resort evokes the intimacy of a traditional Kyoto ryokan with a minimalist aesthetic, and the page does not give a count of suites or pavilions.

Getting there

The hotel is about 30 minutes by car from Kyoto Station, an hour's drive from Osaka International Airport, and two hours by road or about 90 minutes by express train from Kansai International Airport to Kyoto Station. Our itinerary describes the location as north-west of the centre.

That distance is the trade-off to weigh against the setting.

Rooms and the rate

Mr & Mrs Smith shows a starting rate of about US$2,558 a night for the cheapest double, taxes and fees included, for stays in the next 60 days, and lists package offers from about US$2,528 to US$2,684 a night. They move with the exchange rate and the season.

Our itinerary prices its four Kyoto nights at Hoshinoya Kyoto, not here, so choosing Aman Kyoto would raise the total.

Who it suits

It suits travellers who want a retreat in a forest garden with private onsen, using Kyoto's temples by day and returning to quiet in the evening.

It is a poor fit for anyone who wants to be in the centre, for a modest budget, or for anyone who dislikes dependence on a car.

Ask the hotel
  • How many suites and pavilions are there, and which are closest to the entrance?
  • Is a private onsen included with every suite or only some?
  • Does the hotel run a shuttle to the city, and at what hours?
  • Which months are the garden at its best, and how early must we book for cherry blossom?
  • What are the current rates for our dates, with taxes and service charge?
