What it is

Rosewood Luang Prabang is in Ban Nadueay Village, within the Nahm Dong Valley, which its page describes as UNESCO-protected. The grounds are a riverside landscape with natural waterfalls running through them, and the Hilltop Tents are perched above on a hill.

The page lists six kinds of accommodation but no total number of rooms, so we give no count. It does not give a date for the opening or a history for the property.

Dining

The Great House serves Lao flavours and Western-inspired dishes using vegetables and herbs from local markets and farmers, and its fine dining is described as French and Lao. The Elephant Bridge Bar makes cocktails with local herbs and spices, and is said to stand over a creek where elephants once roamed. A private waterfall dinner is offered beside the estate's waterfalls.

Out of town

Our Laos itinerary describes the hotel as just outside the old town, a short drive from the centre. Amantaka, the other hotel it names for the five Luang Prabang nights, is inside the town. The choice decides how you reach the old town.

Rooms and the rate

Mr & Mrs Smith lists the cheapest double at US$702 a night, taxes and fees included, for stays in the next 60 days, and another listing at US$780. Glamping.com lists the property from US$670 a night, with a 10% government tax and a 10% service charge not included, and US$200 a night for each additional person. Our itinerary does not price the Luang Prabang nights at this hotel.

Who it suits

It suits travellers who want a resort in a valley with waterfalls and a choice of villas or tents, and who do not mind driving into town.

It is a poor fit for anyone who wants to walk to the old town in the evening.

Ask the hotel
  • How many rooms, villas and tents are there, and which are open in our month?
  • How far and how long is the drive to the old town, and is a shuttle provided?
  • What does a Waterfall Pool Villa cost compared with a Riverside Room?
  • Is the quoted rate subject to the government tax and service charge?
  • What are the current rates for our dates, with taxes and service charge?
