About this experience

What makes this different

South-eastern Kazakhstan packs several of the country's best landscapes into a region that can be reached from Almaty, and this listing tries to see most of them in one day. The route combines Charyn Canyon, Kaindy Lake, Kolsay Lake and the Black and Moon canyons, with a traditional lunch in a mountain guesthouse. The GetYourGuide page gives the tour a perfect rating of 5.0 from 34 reviews, and English-speaking travellers who reviewed it gave a perfect score. The guide speaks Russian and English, the tour is private, and the price is quoted per person.

The day is long, about twelve hours, and the page sets out a timetable that begins with an early drive. The first stop, Charyn Canyon, is about two and a half hours from Almaty. You spend roughly an hour there, looking at the canyon from the top and walking down a path through the Valley of Castles, where wind and water have carved towers and walls from red rock. The listing describes the view from the rim and the formations that look like castles, and the canyon is the most photographed in the country.

From Charyn the road continues to the village of Saty and the lakes. The listing says it is about a 25-minute drive from the village to Kaindy, and it includes an off-road taxi for the final section. Kaindy Lake is unusual because trees stand in the water: a landslide dammed the valley and drowned a spruce forest, leaving the trunks upright below the surface. The water is cold and clear, and the shapes of the trunks make the lake appear almost otherworldly. After the lake, lunch is served in a local guesthouse, where hosts offer Kazakh dishes, and a vegetarian option is available if you tell the operator.

The next stop is Kolsay Lake, reached by a drive of about twenty minutes from Saty. The listing calls the lakes one of the wonders of Kazakhstan, nicknamed the Kazakh Switzerland, and describes them as lying on the northern slope of the Tien Shan. You spend about an hour there, enough for a walk along the shore and a view of the surrounding forest and meadows. The final stops are the Black Canyon and the Moon Canyon, whose barren, wind-eroded cliffs and spires give it an almost lunar look.

The price was US$235 per person on the GetYourGuide list when we checked in October 2026. It includes lunch at the Kolsay Lake restaurant or guesthouse, an air-conditioned vehicle, private transportation, all fees and taxes, entry to Charyn National Park and to Kolsai Lake, and the off-road taxi. Alcohol is not included. The listing offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start for a full refund, and you can reserve now and pay later.

Be realistic about the effort. Twelve hours with several long drives is tiring, and the listed timetable leaves little room for delays. The roads to the lakes can be slow, especially after rain, and the weather in the mountains changes quickly. Wear layers, comfortable walking shoes and a rain jacket, and bring sunscreen and water. The off-road taxi to Kaindy is bumpy, and people with back problems may find the day uncomfortable.

For a more relaxed pace, consider the two-day version that includes an overnight stay in a mountain cabin, which splits the drive into two stages and leaves time for walks around the lakes. The one-day trip suits travellers with a single day to spare, those who want to see as much as possible, and photographers who prefer the long summer light. Visitors should also check their own fitness, since the walk around Kolsay and the canyon paths involve uneven ground.

Know the geography before you go. The first of the three Kolsay lakes lies at about 1,800 metres above sea level, and Kaindy is higher, in a forested valley where the air is cooler and clearer than on the plain. The village of Saty is the gateway to both, with guesthouses that serve home cooking. The canyon section, with the Black Canyon and Moon Canyon at the end of the day, is the part that visitors most often skip in shorter itineraries, so ask the guide how long you will have at each stop and agree on the plan early.

The lunch is part of the experience. Kazakh meals usually start with tea, bread and small dishes, followed by soup or a meat dish with noodles, and baursak, the fried dough served with tea, is almost always on the table. A vegetarian option is available, and travellers with allergies should say so in advance. After a long morning of driving and walking, a break in a mountain guesthouse is a pleasant pause, and the hosts are often happy to talk about life in the region.

The best season runs from May to October, when the roads are open and the lakes are accessible. September brings autumn colour, and the water of Kaindy is coldest in spring. Kazakhstan's entry rules change, so check your visa requirements before you book.
