About this experience

What makes this different

The lakes and canyons of south-eastern Kazakhstan can be seen in a single twelve-hour day, but many travellers find the schedule punishing. This listing splits the circuit into two days and adds a night in the mountains. Koktem Tour operates it as a private tour, and the GetYourGuide page gives it a rating of 4.7 from 26 reviews. The guide speaks English, Chinese, Kazakh and Russian, the price is per person, and the tour includes hotel pickup and drop-off in Almaty.

The programme covers three highlights. Charyn Canyon is the first, a long gorge in red sandstone with a path through the Valley of Castles, where wind and water have sculpted towers and walls. The Kolsay Lakes, a chain of three alpine lakes in the Tien Shan, are surrounded by forest and meadows, and the listing invites you to walk around them. Kaindy Lake is the third, a cold lake where a flooded spruce forest stands in the water, and the road to it ends with a ride in a four-wheel-drive vehicle, which the price includes.

The distinctive feature is the accommodation. The listing promises a night in a cosy A-frame cabin among the mountains, which it describes as a mix of wild adventure and modern comfort, with fresh air, starry skies and quiet. The inclusions describe the stay as one night in a guesthouse on a breakfast basis, so expect a comfortable but simple room, and ask the operator about the bathroom and heating arrangements, particularly outside summer. The overnight stay turns the trip from a marathon into a mountain weekend, and it leaves time for the early morning at the lakes, when the water is calm and the light is soft.

The price was US$300 per person on the GetYourGuide page when we checked in October 2026. It includes one night's accommodation with breakfast, the 4x4 off-road ride to Kaindy, hotel pickup and drop-off, entrance fees to the tourist sites and water. Extras are listed separately: drone video, a 360-degree spin video, photographer services, horseback riding, boating, alcohol, personal expenses and other additional activities. Horse riding at the lakes is popular, so bring cash if you intend to ride. The listing offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start for a full refund, with the option to reserve now and pay later.

Think about the clothing and equipment. The listing asks you to bring your passport or an ID card, warm clothing, sunglasses, a sun hat, a change of clothes, hiking shoes, sunscreen, cash and any personal medication. Nights in the mountains are cold, even in summer, and the lakes lie at altitude, so a warm jacket, a hat and gloves are sensible. The tour is not suitable for pregnant women, for people with altitude sickness or for people over 80.

The route depends on the weather. Rain can make the road to Kaindy slippery and the 4x4 transfer slower, and a thunderstorm in the mountains can end a walk early. Check the forecast and be flexible. If you can choose your date, September offers gold on the hillsides, while June and July are warmer for walking and swimming in the shallows, although the water is always cold.

Saty and the surrounding villages are part of the appeal of a two-day trip. Guesthouses here serve home-cooked meals, often with bread, jam, dairy products and tea, and the hosts keep horses and sell crafts, honey and dried fruit. In the evening the temperature drops sharply, and the sky is dark enough for stars, which is one reason the operator promotes the stay. Bring a book, a torch and a power bank, since electricity and mobile coverage may be limited.

Kaindy Lake has an unusual origin. It was formed in the early twentieth century, when a strong earthquake caused a landslide that blocked a gorge and flooded a forest of spruce trees. The trunks still stand upright in the water, preserved by the cold, and the lake changes colour with the sky. Swimming is not recommended, because the water is very cold and the lake is deep. A walk along the shore and a viewpoint above the lake give the best sense of the scene.

Talk to the operator before you book about the details that matter to you: the pickup time on the first morning, the length of each drive, the facilities at the guesthouse, whether meals other than breakfast can be arranged, and what happens if the road to Kaindy is closed by rain or snow. Good operators answer such questions quickly, and the answers help you decide whether the two-day format fits your plans, your budget and your tolerance for rough roads.

Compared with the one-day version, this tour trades a little extra cost for much less time in the car and a better chance of seeing the lakes without crowds. It suits couples, small groups of friends and photographers, and anyone who prefers a slower pace. Those with only one day available may find the single-day tour more practical, while those with more time can extend with a visit to Big Almaty Lake or a day in the city.
