What it is

Aman Tokyo occupies the top floors of the Otemachi Tower in Chiyoda-ku. Wikipedia dates it to 2014, credits Kerry Hill with the design and cites a 2014 Wall Street Journal article calling it the company's first resort in a city.

The interiors follow a Japanese tradition, with ikebana displays, washi paper doors and engawa platforms, and natural materials such as wood, stone and paper. The lobby is described as vast.

Rooms and dining

Aman does not give a total room count on the page we read. The suites have floor-to-ceiling windows, shoji doors, stone furo baths and king beds with sunken living areas, and the ryokan-style rooms are described as among the largest in Tokyo.

The hotel names five dining venues, including Musashi by Aman, an Edomae omakase sushi counter, and a lounge and café. Airport transfers are by car: Haneda is about 40 minutes away and Narita about 60.

Rooms and the rate

Mr & Mrs Smith shows a starting rate of about US$2,327 a night for the cheapest double, including taxes and fees, for stays in the next 60 days. Another page from the same site lists about US$2,414, converted from JPY 383,200 at that day's rate. These are snapshots and move with the exchange rate.

Our itinerary prices its Tokyo nights at Palace Hotel Tokyo, not here, so choosing Aman Tokyo would raise the total considerably.

Who it suits

It suits travellers who want a high-end hotel high above Tokyo, with a spa and a pool with city views, and who are ready to pay for it. It appears in both our cherry-blossom and autumn Japan itineraries.

It is a poor fit for anyone watching the budget, or who wants to step out into a lively street: the hotel is in an office tower in a business district.

Ask the hotel
  • How many rooms and suites does the hotel have today?
  • What does the cheapest room offer, and how does it differ from a City Suite?
  • Does Musashi by Aman take reservations from non-guests, and how far ahead?
  • Is the pool open to all guests at all hours?
  • What are the current rates for our dates, with taxes and service charge?
