Everest Sunrise Mountain Flight from Kathmandu
Everest, Lhotse and Makalu from the air in the morning light
What makes this different
The Everest mountain flight leaves Kathmandu early in the morning and flies east along the Himalaya, at an altitude that brings the peaks level with the windows. Every passenger has a window seat, and each gets a turn at the cockpit for a view ahead. It is the easiest way to see Everest without trekking for more than a week, and for many visitors it is the most memorable hour of their time in Nepal.
The flight departs from the domestic terminal of Tribhuvan International Airport, where you check in before dawn. Flights usually take off between six and seven in the morning, when the air is clearest. The aircraft, typically a twin-engine turboprop with around eighteen seats, climbs out of the Kathmandu Valley and heads east.
As the flight progresses, the peaks appear one after another along the northern horizon: Gauri Shankar, Melungtse, Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Makalu. At 8,849 metres, Everest is the highest point on earth, though from the air it can look surprisingly modest beside Lhotse and Nuptse, which stand in front of it. A flight attendant points out each peak and helps you identify them with a mountain card. On clear days, you can see the summit pyramid of Everest and the long ridges that climbers follow to the top.
The flight lasts around an hour, turning back towards Kathmandu once it reaches the Everest region. The aircraft stays on the Nepali side of the border and does not fly over the summit.
The weather decides everything. Flights are often delayed or cancelled when cloud covers the mountains, especially during the monsoon from June to September. If your flight is cancelled, it can usually be rebooked for another day or refunded, so it is wise to schedule it early in your stay in Nepal. The clearest skies are usually from October to December and from February to April.
Bring a camera with a zoom lens if you have one, and dress warmly for the early start. Photographs through the windows can be affected by reflections, so hold your lens close to the glass.
The experience includes a window seat, a turn at the cockpit window, a mountain identification card and a certificate of flight. Airport transfers and meals are not included.
