What it is

Amankora is not one building but a series of five lodges spread across the central and western valleys of Bhutan. Aman's page lists Paro with 24 suites, Thimphu with 16, Punakha with 8, Gangtey with 8 and Bumthang with 16. Wikipedia lists Amankora as opened in 2004 and designed by Kerry Hill.

That makes the country the hotel. Each lodge sits in a different valley, and a stay across several lodges is a journey as well as a place to sleep.

The three lodges in our itinerary

Our 8-day Bhutan itinerary uses three of the five lodges. Amankora Thimphu, in the forest above the capital, takes two nights. Amankora Punakha, in the valley of the Punakha Dzong, takes two nights, and Aman describes it as set in a 300-year-old farmhouse with views of rice paddies. Amankora Paro, in the valley below Tiger's Nest, takes three nights and is the largest of the five lodges, with 24 suites.

Aman's page does not say how guests move between lodges, so ask how transfers are arranged and whether they are included.

Rooms and the rate

Mr & Mrs Smith lists the cheapest double per night, taxes and fees included, as US$2,380 at Punakha, US$2,320 at Gangtey, US$2,260 at Thimphu and US$2,050 at Bumthang and Paro. Michelin Guide's page says rates begin at US$1,700 a night, shown for single occupancy; that page looks older.

En Primeur Club says Bhutan's Sustainable Development Fee is US$100 per adult per day, charged on top of the lodge rate, and US$50 for children aged six to twelve. Confirm the current fee before you budget, because it is set by the government and not by the lodge.

Who it suits

It suits travellers who want to see Bhutan from a small, high-end lodge and are ready to pay for it, ideally across at least two lodges.

It is a poor fit for a modest budget. The Sustainable Development Fee comes on top of the lodge rate, so check exactly what a quote includes.
