What it is

Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto stands at 284 Nijoaburanokoji-cho, next to Nijo Castle in central Kyoto. The hotel's page says the site was the Kyoto home of the Kitake, the executive branch of the Mitsui family, which the family kept for over 250 years. SHIKI-NO-MA, one of its restaurants, is a modern reconstruction of part of the former Mitsui home, built of Japanese cypress.

The page lists 160 rooms and four named dining venues, although it refers to five sections. It does not state when the hotel opened.

The spa

The hotel's thermal spring spa uses natural spring water from a source on the site, and the page lists a private onsen, spa treatments and a gym. Our itinerary describes the hotel as close to Nijo Castle with a natural hot-spring spa. The page gives no more detail on the baths.

Rooms and the rate

Published rates are high and uneven. A review site quotes the hotel's entry-level Deluxe room at JPY 177,100 to JPY 316,250 a night in December 2023. Trabber lists the property from US$977. These are snapshots from different times. Our cherry-blossom itinerary prices its Kyoto nights at Hoshinoya Kyoto, so this page does not feed the total.

Who it suits

It suits travellers who want a central Kyoto address by Nijo Castle, with a spa in the hotel and the history of the site as part of the stay.

It is a poor fit for anyone who wants a ryokan or a quiet garden outside the centre. With 160 rooms it is a large hotel.

Ask the hotel
  • Which rooms look onto the garden, and which are closest to Nijo Castle?
  • Is the private onsen included with a room, or booked by the hour?
  • Which of the restaurants take reservations from guests ahead of arrival?
  • How early must we book for cherry blossom?
  • What are the current rates for our dates, with taxes and service charge?
