What it is

Amansara occupies a building from the 1960s in the New Khmer style that, according to Aman, was once a residence for the guests of King Sihanouk. Our honeymoon itinerary describes it as built in the 1960s as a state guesthouse. The hotel has 24 suites, many with plunge pools and garden courtyards, a circular dining room and a curved pool.

Wikipedia dates the hotel to 2002 and credits Kerry Hill with the design. Its history section does not name a former building for Amansara, so we rely on Aman's own account.

Where it sits

Aman gives the distance to Angkor Wat as ten minutes. The two itineraries that name Amansara place it differently, one in central Siem Reap and the other outside the center on the road to Angkor, so check the address when you plan transfers.

Aman also lists the Khmer Village House, a dining venue in Angkor Park, as part of what it offers.

Rooms and the rate

Published rates are very wide. Kayak showed US$2,036 for a standard room for a night in early November, with no year given on the snippet we read, so treat it as a rough guide. Our Cambodia itinerary notes that it costs several times as much as the other hotels it lists.

Our Cambodia itinerary prices its Siem Reap nights at Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor, so choosing Amansara would raise the total considerably.

Who it suits

It suits travelers who want a design hotel close to Angkor, with a plunge pool and a quiet courtyard, for a few nights of temples and rest. It appears in both our Cambodia and honeymoon itineraries.

It is a poor fit for a modest budget, and for anyone who wants to be on the main street of town in the evening.

Ask the hotel
  • Where exactly is the hotel, and how long is the drive to the Angkor ticket office?
  • Which suites have a private plunge pool?
  • Are temple transfers and guided visits included in the rate?
  • What does the rate include in meals?
  • What are the current rates for our dates, with taxes and service charge?
